The official qualifications for a music therapist vary from country to country, but in general a music therapist needs to have at least a bachelor's degree in music therapy to start with (in the States, if you have certain credits from another degree, you can get your equivalency in music therapy by taking the credits you missed in school).

In Canada, you follow up your education with 1000 hours of internship and then you submit a portfolio to the Canadian Association for Music Therapy (CAMT). If that is approved, you become Music Therapist Accredited, or MTA. You keep up that accreditation through continuing education (attending workshops, conferences, etc.). In the States, after doing your degree and internship, you are required to sit the CBMT exam. You need to pass this exam to practice in US America.
