Beginning Game Development
Platformer Game Introduction:
After testing out GDevelop for the first time in todays workshop, I leant the starting mechanics to create a platformer game. The Platformer game made today consisted of, a green astronaut alien, a grass platform and a pink slime. The green alien was played by the "player", whereas, the pink slime was programmed as the enemy. The goal of the game was to get passed the slime by killing it. The games mechanics were quite simple and nothing new to any gamers. The way to kill the slime, is to jump on its head, however if not fast enough, the slime colliding into the player kills as well.
Mechanics Learnt:
Scenes Events Sprites
Scenes
When you first start GDevelop, the first tab you will come across is a scene. The scene for GDevelop is like a blank canvas, empty and white waiting for something to exciting to happen.
Events
The Events tab is the second tab you will see when using GDevelop. Just like the Scenes tab, this is just another blank space. This is where all the magic happens, all the coding and previewing is found here in this tab.
Sprites
The next thing learnt was a mechanic called "Sprite". A "sprite" is an object that can be used for anything, platforms, backgrounds, characters and even props. This can be found through clicking the (+ Add a new object) at the bottom right of GDevelop. In this case my first four sprites were a "player", "slime", "grass platform", "left", and "right".
With the end of my first day on GDevelop my final product for my first platform game ended up looking like this.
