Tales of Deep Ether
Prava Doerni is well known as the co-creator of "Captain Shadow". The Manapitch Weekly Aethergraph conducted an interview with her for the show's 50th anniversary, and here are some quotes:
"Well, of course by the time we created the show etherships were real, they'd been around for a long time. But you know: so many people out there have never boarded one, or ever seen a person from another world. So we felt there was still a lot of room for escapism. Besides, the Voidknife can do many things that a real ethership can't... not yet."
“Billie was… controversial. Some people became quite agitated that someone who hadn’t hit puberty was handling a bridge console. But the Captain always picks the best person for the job from the people they have at hand, and Billie was the best at what they did. Of course, when Billie grew up a bit, we found out there was more going on than met the eye. That was fun to set up bit by bit over the years.”
"It's been interesting avoiding gendered pronouns for the Captain. With the Captain's gender possibly changing with every morphic event, it feels funny to have a character say "he gave the order" when the Captain wasn't a 'he' when the order was issued, or the Captain isn't a 'he' now. We experimented with new genderless pronouns, but our audience didn't like them. Maybe we'll try again in a few years!”
Come to a live taping of a "Captain Shadow" episode at Intervention 7!
