Ā Pardon me if I donāt jump on the bandwagon of the collective sadness emanating from all corners of the internet and the media over the demise of Americaās beloved junk food: Hostess Cupcakes, Twinkies, Ding Dongs, Ho-Hos, Snowballs and the like.Ā I canāt say that Iāll be sad to see an era of sugar-glazed and preservative-laced fruit pies come to a temporary end any more than Iāll miss loaves of white Wonder bread and all bakery-fresh odors of their many outlet stores.
Of course, I have fond memories from when I was younger of consuming those sweet and yummy treats, but taste palates change with age, and like most people, I gradually grew out of them as I became more dietary conscious about what kinds of foods I eat.Ā Iād rather keep those memories as they are.Ā I understand that a lot of people still love them though, and the disappointment for them is real.Ā However, their enduring popularity and place in Americana lore wonāt keep them down forever.Ā Once the brands are sold to other bakery conglomerates, theyāll be right back into production, and maybe even at some of the plants whose workers were let go after the conflict between the Hostess Brands executive board and employee union representatives reached its long-forecasted and grossly ignoble impasse.
Interstate Bakeries merged with the Continental Baking Company in 1995, and with the assimilation of their Wonder and Hostess brands, the production of their products underwent a major shift in how they were made, including the introduction of special enzymes designed to extend the shelf life of baked goods so their operations could be streamlined into mass production work at a few large bakeries rather than many smaller ones.Ā Around that same time, a cultural shift was underway in the United States from the then-common diets of prepackaged, processed foods (which were rapidly being targeted as a major contributing factor to the growing problem of obesity) to a more health-conscious awareness of their effects on the human body.Ā Additionally, the popularity of programs like the Atkins diet, which eschewed the intake of carbohydrates found in bread, as well as competition from expanding businesses like Krispy Kreme doughnuts started to negatively impact their bottom line.
As sales decreased, so did stock prices and revenue, and it led to Interstate Bakeries filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2004.Ā Five years later, they emerged as a changed company.Ā 50% of their equity was purchased by Ripplewood Holdings, a private equity firm.Ā The union representing their workers made contract concessions to preserve their employment in exchange for shares of equity.Ā The bankruptcy slashed Interstateās workforce by 10,000 jobs and also resulted in numerous bakery shutdowns and store closures.Ā Under the newly renamed āHostess Brandsā label, the corporation continued to struggle.Ā They suspended payments on union pensions and faced the continuing challenge of staying current on their $700 million loan that was keeping them in business.Ā Early this year, they filed for Chapter 11 again, citing concerns with paying for pensions, health care benefits and work rule restrictions.Ā Although they were floundering with fewer employees and deeper in debt than they ever had been, they were adamant about remaining in business.
Unhappy with the lack of a financial turnaround, their CEO was pressured out in March, but with him went an almost $3.5 million compensation package and cash incentives.Ā Other Hostess executives also received 80% raises the previous year.Ā In an effort to save face, the new CEO in charge of restructuring cut four of the top salaries to $1, but those werenāt scheduled to go into effect until 2013.Ā In the meantime, contract negotiations between Hostess and the Teamsters union continued.Ā The union was prepared to give in on decreases to wages and benefits as long as the pensions were kept intact.Ā As a result, mass layoffs threatened.
With downsizing looming and a new contract still not on the table, about 1/3 of the workforce that was represented by the international bakers union (BCTGM) went on strike earlier this month after the latest contract proposal was rejected by 92% of their members.Ā In response, Hostess executives, already operating with fewer employees and a slimmed down production schedule, countered with a threat to liquidate the company if striking workers didnāt return to their jobs and the negotiating table.Ā On the 16th of November, they made good on that threat.Ā Now itās up to a U.S. bankruptcy court judge to decide their fate, and thatās where we are today.
In the wake of this latest exchange between union workers and executives, many people online and in the press have been quick to point the fingers of blame at whichever side they are least sympathetic to.Ā In a lot of ways, itās reflective of the deep political divisions this country continues to deal with.Ā The last presidential election was less than two weeks prior, and many Americans are still seething with resentment for the side they disagree with ideologically.Ā Itās manifested now in angry words directed toward either the union representatives or the corporate executives depending on which group individuals sympathize with the most.
However, my personal opinion would argue that pride, arrogance and greediness from company suits as well as union leaders both contributed to Hostessā decision to liquidate their business.Ā The top guys at the private equity firm that ran this imperiled company into the ground are as much to blame for the end result as the stubborn union bosses.Ā Itās as simplistic and naive for people to only place responsibility on the union or employees as much as it is to say that the company executives were solely to blame. Ā In fact, this was a business failure nearly a decade in the making, and a lot of it stems from years of poor communication and bitterness between Hostess Brands, Inc. and union representatives. Ā Unfortunately, it's the workers themselves that got caught in the middle.
Sadly, little of that matters to a lot of their customers.Ā Some people will lose their minds over the possibility of going without white bread and snack cakes, but theyāll barely give a second thought to the employees whose jobs it was to bring them to market.Ā However, my fingers are crossed that their bakeries will be up-and-running again soon, hopefully with many of the same folks that are being laid off, and maybe under the banner of another company with more of an interest in staying in business.
