Reposted from @natgirsberger It’s life-changing, seems to be the consensus among most people I know that are into yoga. Probably 95% of those would also agree that they didn’t like it when they first tried it. Most name the word hate. So did I when I first tried. I couldn’t keep up with the postures, I wasn’t aware of half the body parts that were called out, and it felt generally absurd too me. Fast forward and I’m certified and I accredit most of my artistic career and inspiration to the practice, let alone most of my community. But what happens in between the “hate” and the “life change”? Ironically, the same old practice. What changes is not really about getting the hang of complex poses or increased flexibility. It’s about you. Practice, while having those benefits, in its repetition allows for you to change. You come back to the same old sequences as the same body, but through awareness of it you can transform your state. What shifts is noticing that your awareness, in fact, doesn’t change at all. That it’s the one thing that remains exactly the same in a world of constant shifts and fluctuations that mirrors our own minds. Seeing this makes a major difference in a lot of lives. I write this out of love for this practice that made my life so much fuller, in the hopes to inspire someone who thinks they “hate” yoga to give it another shot. I came back to it in a time when I was basically up to try anything since I’d gone through a heartbreak and felt generally lost. Otherwise I may have never returned. I’m so glad I did. Yoga soon began to permeate my life in all areas. Through the physical experience of asana you begin to energetically integrate the practice everywhere. Yoga to me is not about following a strict set of rules and getting to a universal truth. It’s about asking questions that bring you closer to yours, so that it can help you navigate the gift of life. I don’t subscribe to one path, but rather my own version of yoga tailor made for my life. To me it’s not all about love and light, but honestly observing the shadow and enjoying the two as they interact.
