Experimental Magazines and the International Avant-Gardes, 1945â75
Monday, December 11, 2006 6:00 p.m. This panel considers various aspects of the avant-garde magazine. Examining experimental journals that were conceived as ongoing platforms for new works of art, graphic experimentation, and simultaneous expression in the arts, literature, philosophy, politics, and other fields, participants discuss the ways in which magazines represented the ideas of particular artistic and intellectual communities, even as they responded to and disseminated ideas internationally. With Liza Bear, former editor and co-founder with Willoughby Sharp of Avalanche magazine (1970â76); Benjamin Buchloh, Franklin D. and Florence Rosenblatt Professor of Modern Art, Harvard University and former editor of Interfunktionen (1968â75); Edward Sullivan, Dean for the Humanities and Professor of Fine Arts, New York University; and Willoughby Sharp, independent curator, artist, and former publisher and co-founder of Avalanche. Moderated by David Little, Director of Adult and Academic Programs, The Museum of Modern Art.

interfunktionen issues 2â7, containing multiples by Beuys
Cologne-based F. W. Heubach founded the art and theory magazine interfunktionen in 1968. He used this publication as a platform for artists who held no affinity for Pop Art, kinetic art, environmental art and minimalism, which had dominated that yearâs documenta 4 exhibition.1 Published at irregular intervals over the next seven years, the twelve issues of the magazine served as vessels for distributing information and as artworks in their own right. With a changing roster of authors and editors, interfunktionen became an influential voice in the West German art world.2 Fifty to sixty copies of each issueâs print run were special editions, containing contributions by invited artists.
Asked to contribute to issues two through seven of interfunktionen, Beuys used the magazine to publish photographs of his recent performances, print texts on topics like the ideal art academy, or reproduce existing drawings and other artworks. By adding stamps, inscriptions, and hand-collaged elements to this material, he transformed it into a series of multiples.
