Copyright law is so crazy that seemingly the only way you can get away with building a streaming TV service is by using thousands of tiny antennas, like Aereo did. (It sounds crazy, but Aereo was built around a 2008 legal decision. Seriously.) And it's driving the TV networks insane that this technology can even exist. But it's not going away anytime soon: They won a big legal victory today, with an appeals court denying a preliminary injunction to shut the service down. Next step? They're going to trial.
IAC Poaches AOL SVP To Be New Vimeo CEO
By Will Wei
IAC just announced that its popular video sharing site Vimeo has a new CEO. His name is Kerry Trainor and he was poached by IAC from AOL. Poached from AOL -- you don't hear that very often.
Trainor was an SVP and General Manager for the Huffington Post Media Group, and he takes over as Vimeo CEO in place of Dae Mellencamp, who will stay on as Vimeo's president.
Vimeo is known around the Internet as a hipster/artsy YouTube. Launched in 2004 and acquired by IAC in August 2006, Vimeo has reportedly been shopped around by IAC, which -- according to PandoDaily -- is looking to sell a 50% stake in the video sharing site.
One reasoning behind this rumored potential sale is that Vimeo has avoided placing ads on or around its videos. "We consider the video player to be sacred," said Vimeo community director Blake Whitman in a past interview. "The content that you put up there, we feel like it's yours, and we will never put an ad in or on top of your video."
Now, as Vimeo's new CEO, Kerry Trainor is tasked with the big assignment of finding different streams of revenue -- hopefully without intruding on Vimeo's clean, ad-free videos and pages.
Best of luck, Trainor, and here's hoping you keep Vimeo looking like Vimeo, without those annoying overlay and pre-roll ads, a la YouTube.
