I think it's very important that Dawn was the first character onscreen to get the polyamory ball rolling in the Ash friend group, for one reason:
The idea of losing a partner to a second significant other would never cross her mind. Her? Not good enough to be picked over someone else? Ash ever dismissing someone as great as Dawn?
The thought doesn't even cross Dawn's mind to dismiss it; she never even thinks of it. She'd laugh at it. She's that far up her own ass.
And, that, combined with her general struggle with social complexities and disdain for reading between the lines and in authenticity, makes her a strong believer in expressing whatever you feel, no matter what!
