Sheâd managed leaving the apartment today, not just to go to work, which was pretty much the only reason sheâd left the house at all in the past two weeks. Work was work, nothing to be done for it. Enough people had kept her company, both the living and the dead, and it was the latter that weighed heavy on her mind today. Days that she missed Helen most, she went to get fresh-squeezed orange juice. Helen had been from Florida in her youth and sheâd always believed that fresh squeezed tasted betterâand sheâd been right. It was like a small homage, something she could share when they talked next. But today, she couldnât talk to Helen herself... it was their anniversary and she needed space to mourn, to remember, in ways that talking to the dead could never fully satisfy.
Because she was mourning not just the loss of her first love, her first girlfriend, her first real relationship, but also the real turning point in her life, that moment that irrevocably changed her trajectory. The moment she gave up ballet and the dream of a normal life. Magda had just been sixteen. Three years later, Maria came calling. And now, at 28, sheâd been assaulted by Satan. Her life felt completely out of her control in ways she could never hope to fix. She felt her gaze shift away from the orange juice in her hand as she sat in the front of Smooth Mooves, her eyes alighting on a magpie, and she wished with too much of her being that she could become a bird and just leave it all behind her. The responsibilities, the haunted past, all of it. Using the side of her wrist, she wiped one tear off of her cheek before realizing Adele had come out of the kitchen and seen her; at least Magda had the decency to blush.
