“Hey nerd,” Lilo called grabbing a chair from another table and dragging it to Hiro’s. Her shift at the record store was over and since going home just meant being around her stressed sister, she thought she’d come see what Hiro was up to. 

Unlike Lilo, Hiro was way cooler than the rest of the world, he had talent and ideas to better things, everyone needs an ideas man. Lilo was just surfing through life hoping to make enough money to help pay for rent with her sister. Being friends with Hiro was kind of the most productive thing she’d done with her life so far. He was brilliant and rarely did she honestly think of someone like that. She could totally see him in one of those nerd schools where they are awesome all day long and he’d have awesome friends who were just as smart. However, life sucked, so he was stuck with Lilo. Hiro was one of the only people that didn’t make Lilo feel self-conscious about her strange habits. 

College will be better, they said. Well, it might’ve been, had Mertle not been in one of her classes, again. 

These days Mertle took more joy out of making Lilo look like she was overreacting than actually offending her. Today was one of those days. Mertle would snicker and point, making Lilo uncomfortable and paranoid. It was easier when the redhead did something for everyone to see. Even if she got called to the dean’s office and Nani yelled at her all the way home. It was better than this. This constant fear that everyone was laughing at her too.

Asides from Stitch, Mertle made sure no one was friends with Lilo. Everyone thought she was weird and her violent outbursts didn’t make her on anyone’s ‘to befriend’ list. Stitch wasn’t much better, but he still found his own weird group of friends. Lilo, was alone. 

So maybe she hurried out of her class quicker than necessary, but she needed a head start. Mertle never quit, the never-ending mockery never ends. At work, at school, walking around town, short of following her home, it was constant. Maybe it’d gotten worst since she made the redhead’s nose bleed. 

Nevertheless, Lilo rode her skateboard as fast as she could. The blaring of pop music coming from Mertle’s stupid expensive car not far behind her. Once she got downtown again, she grabbed her board and hurried into the first open building.
