Lily found James almost in the first place she looked: near the Quidditch supplies. “There you are,” she said, coming up next to him and slipping her hand into his and resting her head on his shoulder. “I figured it was either here or Zonko’s.” She perused the contents of the stall in front of her and smiled. “Don’t you have enough of this rubbish at home?” She was intentionally needling him; it had been a closely-guarded secret for years that Lily was nearly as big a Quidditch fan as James was, although she far preferred watching to playing. He’d finally gotten it out of her when they’d become closer friends Sixth Year. He likely knew she was just teasing, but trying to get a rise out of him was fun anyway. “See anything you like?” she asked, looking down at the assorted items. 

The sound of a throat clearing behind her startled her out of her self-pity, and she jumped. Whipping around in the high-backed chair to see James Potter standing in the portrait hole of the Gryffindor Common Room, she placed a hand to her racing heart. “Merlin, Potter, you scared me.” Narrowing her eyes, she asked, “What were you up to out of bed so late?”

“mr potter, is there a reason you’re out after curfew?” a smirk dawned his lips as the gryffindor became visible to him. “surely you wouldn’t like a detention with slughorn, or would you? i could certainly arrange that for you if you’d like.”

gideon always found that his time with james left him with an unfamiliar feeling inside. something he’d only felt for his brother. admiration. james, like fabian, was everything he wanted to be.. confident, social, funny, but did this mean more than that? after all.. if his brother was the only person to make him feel like this.. did that mean he found someone similar enough to him that he simply feels comfort? or was it more than that? merlin, you’ve been dead quiet for a good minute, say something! 

“i got my hands on something yesterday... thought you might be interested.” eyes flicker with paranoia as he gauges their surroundings. “i can’t show you here though, i could get in trouble.”

Lily had stopped to get another drink and somehow lost the birthday boy in the crowd. She took a moment to observe the large crowd that had gathered, pleased to see so many smiling and familiar faces there to celebrate James’s big day. It made her happy, to know that the boy she loved so much was so loved by others. Finally spotting the familiar head of messy hair in the distance, she made her way over to him, handing him a drink of his own and smiling. “There you are,” she said, leaning up to give him a kiss on the cheek. “Happy birthday.” She’d said it already, of course, but it seemed worth repeating. She turned back to the crowd. “It was a nice turnout, yes?”
