The installation piece is a narrow, cocoon like vertical structure that fully encloses the individual occupant and changes the way people view and interact with the space. The blank outward appearance of the work sparks the curiosity of the viewer who is invited to occupy or peer into the inside to uncover something hidden. The use of light, darkness and suspended spherical components references planets, stars and solar systems and suggests another world.

The installation is constructed from reassembled cardboard boxes that have been spray painted on both sides before being stacked and taped together. The structure is anchored to the ground with tape and the stairway banisters with fishing line to provide additional structural support. Inside the structure, woollen pom poms of different sizes and colours are suspended from above. The dimensions of the work are approximately one meter in diameter and three meters in height.

The process used collected cardboard boxes which were then flattened and painted black on each side using aerosol cans. The cardboard was then taped together to form larger box shapes. These new forms were then stacked on top of one another to create a hollow vertical structure. An entrance was created by leaving some cardboard unattached which created an opening. The pom poms were joined together with string to create a singular giant cluster which is suspended above the open top of the structure from a wooden rod.

The work is located in the ground floor entry foyer of the Dorrit Black building in the UniSA City West Campus. The main features of this space are reasonably high traffic to and from the elevator shaft and a lack of natural light. This location was chosen to display the work because it provides protection from adverse weather conditions and ensures visibility of the work to encourage people to engage with the installation from both within and without.

The entry foyer is a circulation space that typically provides a thoroughfare for staff and students between destinations. The work interrupts people on their journey and encourages quiet exploration and a moment of pause.  The viewer is encouraged to view and experience the space in a different way to which they normally would through the use of different viewing perspectives.

A possible alternative to our original location for Assessment 3. This is a stairwell in the covered main entry courtyard of the UniSA City West campus. Instead of installing the work between two flights of stairs we could install it adjacent to a single flight, thereby continuing to provide two levels and multiple viewing perspectives as well as a method of anchorage to ensure structural stability.

Day: Thur 28 March Time: 2:08-2:18PM Observation of the space and how it is used: 65 people passed through this space in only 10 minutes. This location on campus is a high traffic circulation area which is very noisy. Mostly people were traveling on their own or in groups of 2-3. Some of these people were talking to each other but no one stopped at any point to rest. Coming down, people had their eyes fixed on the exit door and going up they were watching the floor in front of them. This area receives natural light from the glass brick wall as well as artificial light. We are thinking of using the space in between the stairs which is about a meter wide to construct a hollow vertical installation that can be experienced by one person at a time from inside. The structure will be supported by its own rigidity (depending on material choice eg. cardboard) as well as receiving additional support from tensioned ties on the balcony. We are thinking of building the structure to the height of two people (about three meters) with peepholes at various heights to provide light to the interior and another mode of interacting with the installation.

Location            We propose to create an installation in the stairwell of the Library in the UniSA City West campus.

Construction    Deconstructed cardboard boxes that are painted on the interior that are then stacked and taped together. The form will be anchored to the banisters with string to provide additional support.

Removal            The removal of the structure will be a reversal of the construction process where the string is untied and the boxes dismantled in the space.

Dimensions   Approximately 1 meter diameter, 4.5m height.

Public Safety Being in between the stairs, the installation will not block the exits or cause congestion through the main thoroughfare. The installation will not prevent access to building services in the area.
