David Hockney, Nude, 17th June 1984, 1984
The work is a cubist-style "joiner," assembled from roughly 140 individual photographs to portray American actress Theresa Russell lying on a bed while portraying Marilyn Monroe.
Director Nicolas Roeg commissioned Hockney to create the artwork as a prop for his 1985 film "Insignificance," where it appears as a centerfold. Rather than displaying a single perspective, Hockney used a Pentax camera to photograph the scene from numerous angles, forcing the viewer's eye to linger over time and space. The collage measures approximately 120.5 Γ 177.5 cm.

Jim O'Rourke - Insignificance (2001)

sometimes i remember just how amazing the scope of the world is. if you went onto wikipedia or the internet right now and clicked on a random term, you'd most likely find some event or process or thing that's incredibly bizarre. or horrifying. or astoundingly beautiful. and you may think "wow, how did i never learn of this thing before? does anyone else know about this? how is this not talked about all the time!" and the truth is that it is a miniscule factor in the grand scheme of our world. it may even affect a decent chunk of the natural world or human population, but it's just a small blip in the natural history of the earth. there's millions, billions of more phenomena just like that one small, beautiful detail affecting life. and there's more. there's so much more small little wondrous unique things happening in the world around us, or in the world far away from us. hundreds and thousands and tens of thousands and millions and billions of processes and happenings and interactions between atoms and molecules and cells and organisms and living things and non living things that make up the complexity of the planet we live on. and that's just talking the our planet! that's not even counting the complexities of the millions and billions or other things out there in the universe with their own goings-on! we might not find it as interesting or important (well- most people living their day-to-day lives that aren't space scientists) just because there isn't any life we know of, but there are still so many incredible things being created and destroyed and interacting with one another on molecular and cosmic scales all the time. always. and it's wonderful. and you are part of that. your little beautiful body with trillions of cells and bacteria living in you. helping you exist, with your interactions with other and the environment and the choices you make and the thoughts you think with the neurons and synapses in your brain all firing and making new connections constantly. our planet is so huge that we can't even begin to comprehend the start of the intricacies and the vastness of it all at once. there's so many small, minute variations in everything everywhere that even though so much is the same on a macro level, the tiny building blocks that make up a thing or lead to a phenomena are entirely unique. it all matters. even the smallest of changes in remote locations that no person could ever access- something new is being created. there is new and beautiful things happening and it is changing the future. even if only for a fraction of a second.
