I'm here for baffling moments in hiring 👀🍿
Okay so context:
1) Job is mid-entry level position (2+ year experience, not *entirely* required that experience be job vs undergrad research but real world job experience def preferred)
2) this is a lab position. That requires you to be in lab
3) there is literally one (1) requested skill. Everything else on the job skill list will automatically be checked off if you have the one (1) skill I am looking for
Okay so top 3 baffling moments:
1) there are. So. Many. People who have applied that are missing the one (1) skill i have asked for. And have outright said on application that they dont have it but
2) I have had at least five (5!) people write "n/a" as the response to the question asking about the one (1) relevant skill????? How are you going to tell me "not applicable" the ONE question on the APPLICATION asking if you have the ONLY RELEVANT SKILLSET REQUIRED???????
3) have also had more than one person apply that explicitly state they are looking for fully remote positions only. Baby girl (gn) this job requires growing bacteria and autoclaving???? How you gonna clone plasmids remotely???? Do you have >$100,000 in lab equipment in your basement???? Is your basement rated for BSL1 level work????
Anyways bonus point not as baffling just a gaffe but pro tip for folks out there: don't directly tell the hiring manager you hate troubleshooting and problem solving for a position where you are expected to independently troubleshoot and problem solve.
