The majestic Punakha Dzong in all its glory - Bhutan As we drove on the winding roads, we saw this magnificent building hiding behind the purple clouds of jacaranda blossom. The dzong is located right at the confluence of 2 rivers - Po Chhu and Mo Chhu. The sight of Punakha dzong standing alongside a row of jacaranda trees in full purple bloom, against a clear blue sky, encircled by two sparkling rivers, and wrapped in the fragrance of incense, looked painstakingly beautiful. A river flowing through Phobjikha or Gangtey Valley, Bhutan ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Two rivers flow through Phobjikha valley - Nakay Chhu (representing a snake) and Gay Chhu (representing a boar). A local folklore states that the two animals once decided to compete under an agreement that if the snake wins, rice will be grown in the valley farms and if it loses, rice will never be grown there. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Till today, there are no rice fields in the entire Phobjikha or Gangtey valley as the snake lost the race against boar. The villagers are instead involved in potato and turnip farming and the rice is brought from outside the valley. The longest suspension bridge in Punakha, Bhutan over the Po Chhu River ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Built over the swiftly flowing Po Chhu river, this suspension bridge in Punakha is 180 metre long and is loaded with colourful Buddhist prayer flags that flutter continuously with the strong wind. It was a scary yet a thrilling experience to cross to the other side of the bridge. The Paro Taktsang or Tiger's Nest monastery, Bhutan Like most prominent buildings in Bhutan, Paro Taktsang has white exteriors and red/ gold roof. The monastery has 4 temples, 8 caves and residential quarters for the monks. The cave where Guru Padmasambhava meditated can still be seen inside the monastery. Sun setting behind the hills in Phobjikha or Gangtey valley, Bhutan We are extremely fond of sun-sets and the only thing that we missed while in Bhutan were witnessing sunsets. The sun used to set early behind the tall mountains without anyone's notice. But the one in Phobjikha valley was spectacular. As the valley is vast and is surrounded by small hills, we were able to witness this stunning sunset one evening while crossing a stream. Punakha valley with the meandering Mo Chhu River flowing zigzag, Bhutan After an hour hike we were awarded with this amazing view of Punakha valley from the top of the Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten, Punakha. The hike was an adventure in itself - we crossed a swaying suspension bridge, walked through the paddy fields and slowly ascended the hill full of pine trees and flowering plants. All the calories burnt were worth it when exposed to this view.
