The INSAS is a basic concept ruined impressively well by a country that’s supposed to have beaten colonialism. You’d think a country of 1 billion people could make a rifle heavily reliant on other popular designs and have it work reasonably well, but here we are instead. They made an AK that JAMS, for fucks’ sake! It literally sprays oil into the user’s eye! The magazines are lower quality than those made by a drunken Brit farmer in his garage! These are fundamental principles of firearms design that everyone else figured out decades ago, and ARDE couldn’t even take a working one and have it keep working.
Somehow India eludes basic concept that every other former British colony managed to get down - even Rhodesians with access to two files and a broken lathe made functional guns. I mean the basic mechanics are so simple that it makes stuff like the AR-18 look complex and yet somehow the INSAS platform has had more hiccups than any other major firearm.
The only failure bigger than the INSAS itself has been the development and procurement process around it. There have been at least as many prototype replacements for the INSAS as there are production models, everything from the ARX 160 to the OG M16A1 have been tried, and they can’t give it up. Just read it on Wikipedia for yourself - the simple truth is more damning than anything I can come up with.

Indian small arms procurement is a complex business. Not only is the Indian Army extremely large, standing at around 1.2 million men, but it also has a complex procurement structure and an indigenous small arms manufacturing base that has failed to provide weapons that meet the Indian Army’s requirements.
The history of Indian small arms is one of my areas of interest and part of that is their recent difficulties in procuring various new weapons. I recently wrote a piece on why the Indian Army has struggled to procure a replacement for the troubled INSAS rifle and about the current state of India’s efforts to manufacture their own small arms.
