#insane hyperfixation

Overall this adaptation was very standard but a good and well thought out interpretation. It told the story without any gender swaps or different time frames. Anything slightly homosexual was removed which is unfortunately also very common. Luckily Basil was still a part of the story in this film and acted as the angel on Dorian’s shoulder, a contrast to Henry who is like the devil on the other shoulder. Basil’s worship of Dorian is replaced by logic, making Basil more intelligent than the other versions of him. He even suspects that Dorian’s eternal youth has something to do with the portrait.

Some things were added into the story as well, including an extra scene with Alan Campbell in which Dorian tries to get him to do drugs.

I recorded the scene where Basil is murdered which I think is done very well.

While Alan is dissolving Basil’s body, Henry and Dorian go to Selby where Dorian plays with a bird while Henry complains about coming to the country for nothing and says that Dorian is acting strangely. Then they meet Hetty Merton, a girl who is 18 and loves Dorian. She is almost exactly like Sybil Vain (both characters are played by Susan Oliver).

They go back to London where James attempts to kill Dorian. So he runs back to Selby and plays with Hetty’s feelings by saying she is beautiful and kissing her. Then Dorian leaves so he doesn’t ruin her life and thinks he is going to become a better person.

Hetty acts as the second young love interest for Dorian to attempt to redeem himself with. This same method is used in the 1945, 1973, and 2009 adaptations.

Lord Henry laughs at Dorian for trying to be better and doesn’t take him seriously. He says that Hetty will be sad that  Dorian left her and implies that she will kill herself just like Sybil.
