There’s an unusual softness to her gaze, an affection she had long since forgotten that she was capable of. So, maybe this wasn’t so bad…. Maybe the team was tolerable, especially their leader – who has come so far. It was one of those days, some time after they had gotten to the bottom of the rumor and figured out who that missing girl was. Somewhere, from the moment she smashed his face into his plate of mashed potatoes to now, a bond had been formed.
Who would have thought that his stupid kid would be the light at the end of the long ass tunnel she had been stuck in. He showed her a completely new world, one where she was capable of feeling anything other than resentment and bitterness toward the world around them. She had forgotten what it felt like to smile the way her heart ached to. Or the feeling of being cared for and loved. To be the one being taken care of rather than doing the protecting. That was a part of herself she did not see herself capable of anymore –
– but Kei had proved her wrong.
“You know…,” she began hesitantly, picking at the grass under them. She was using Kei as a pillow, despite her being the tallest between the two. “Fall is ending soon. Winter is around the corner…. I was thinking that…. Maybe…. I can go back to Italy for a bit.” There was hesitation in her tone – a child like fear – as she turned her head away. Avoiding looking up at the other, she let out a strained sigh.
Shaking her head, she turned over onto her stomach now. Resting her arms on his abdomen, she pressed her cheek against her forearm, looking at their leader once more. “… Forget it,” she mumbled out, pressing her face into his stomach now to hide the flush of her cheeks, lips lingering where they touched. Shooting up, she brushed back her hair. “I–I’m going to go inside now.”
