BL Trope Du Jour

The Forest Frolic 

AKA damsel gets lost/injured/clumsy in the woods 

AKA kiss me in a tent 

In Thai Bl this is often used both to promo tourism and encourage cultural resource management volunteers at the college level in country. 

This one does not come from origin yaoi. In fact, I can’t think of any of the early high school or university set yaois that have this trope. My Love Mix Up was the first time I’ve seen Japan do this in any BL form: manga, anime, or live action. Occasionally yaois would have a countryside visit, but that’s usually to family or walking around a seaside village or something quaint. Kdramas still love a weekend get away trope. 

Honestly, I think we can blame Love Sick 2 for popularizing this trope in Thai BL. It’s a companion trope to the beach frolic (which Love Sick ALSO did in season 1). Which is unquestionably all about the Thai tourist board understanding the international reach of BL and trying to get people to visit. 

Narratively, it’s a means to of encouraging cohabitation, proximity, and stressing the characters with he tension of an unfamiliar setting. Production wise it’s pretty and relatively cheap (for Thailand anyway).
