Call Through The Wire - Inner Oceans.
Inner Oceans have been kicking it for a few years on the Denver music scene, but I think 2017 will be the year they massively expand their fan base. They certainly deserve to. Composed of Griff Snyder (ex-Dovekins), Julia Mendiolea, and Charles Kern, Inner Oceans crafts some deeply personal tunes with innovative atmospheres. Snyder has described the sound they’re aiming for as a mix of the sonic landscapes of Boards of Canada and the emotional punch of Peter Gabriel, and I can totally hear that in the track “Call Through The Wire”. The song came together in a single creative burst in a writing session in a mountain hideaway. Talking about the track, the band says, “We wrote about the people in our lives that never change, never leave, never disappear. And how, assuredly, they one day will.”
I really like what I’ve heard from Inner Oceans so far, and look forward to their debut album, out sometime this year.

I like the description Denver’s Inner Oceans has written down on their Soundcloud profile, “looking for an ancient ghost”. I also like the band’s name. It all seems rather spiritual, drenched in mystique. The same can be said of their music, known to channel haunting electronic tones and unconventional infectious melodies. New single Apparition is an airy exotic, sinuous bewitching fusion of erratic dream pop and artsy dark pop lined with a captivating dosage of trip hop. The song comes from Inner Oceans’ debut album, I Don’t Mind, due out September 16th.
It’s deeply captivating to follow an artist through the chapters of their musical journeys, taking turns and paths into new territories, hearing and seeing them mature, stretch, and build their songwriting muscles. Peeking into the keyhole of Wild Nothing’s new album, Life of Pause (Captured Tracks), and then joining Jack Tatum in his grown up listening lounge is not only a joy, it’s an entry into his world.
Tatum has said that when he approached the songwriting for this third album (Gemini, 2010; Nocturn, 2012), “I just kept things really simple, writing as ideas came to me,” and that release and letting go, writing from a point of allowing, is evident.
On “A Woman’s Wisdom” the mood is relaxed, effortless, and styled for the afternoon spring breeze, while still personifying layered, captivating textures. The opening track, “Reichpop,” wafts in space, then bubbles and bounces to a rain-induced rhythm, feeling reminiscent to Bombay Bicycle Club and Dutch Uncles.
