giggling that’s right !! my main account is now completely obsolete because the original designs have been improved upon!

with the beast arcs coming up, i wanted to finally get these done so i can work on their awakened forms!

also i forgot to change the background but at this point im too lazy lmao

time to get annoying about my swapped ancients and their designs!! just like with the beasts, ill be talking about why i put these guys where i did and the inspirations from both their original designs and their current ones!

first off, lets do a little side by side comparison.

crazy right? its amazing what studying styles and being friends with summerdoddles does to a man.

lets get into it!

The Swaps

In my original post, a lot of confusion came from the fact that I changed the Soul Jams for some of the characters. one arguement was that Wizard should have had the Light of Truth, with it being a part of the Virtue of Knowledge, but I feel as if Perseverance fit him so much better.

with the changes i made to the lights, its important to note that i didnt change them completely. Passion and Determination stem from the same thought process and feeling, same with Resolution and Perseverance (though one is about the ending/solution, the other is the journey towards it).

however, i did want wiz to be half of Knowledge, I just didn't want him to be Truth. and my response to that dilemma? its my damn au and i get to do what i want <33

the reason i made these changes was to have their Lights fit their characters better. im very firm about not doing 1:1 swaps and having flexibility in my story. i wasnt going to change the characters to fit the lights, so we did it the other way around. this was something i had in mind from the very start.

Designs

onto the fun stuff!

i originally wasn't going to draw at all this was all purely going to be written. i had issues with trying to do multiple things at once and was doing my best to stick to a single medium. i failed that shit tho i love drawing when i have the energy for it.

bea, my beta reader and my Opinion Boy who i constantly throw balls at, was actually the first person to bring up drawing them. which got me talking about how i was viewing them, specifically with St. Brave looking like Ovenwanderer from Crumble and Strawberry being Shiningberry from TOA.

these were the original designs for wiz and berry, drawn by bea, which i used as inspo for my original designs.

after they started those, i decided to actually put thought into them and came up with this list! you can tell even my og designs sort of veered off from this.

moving on to specific characters! lets start with our favorite narrative haunter, Saint Brave!

my main issue with gingerbrave, as well as berry and wiz, was that i was trying to make common cookies into ancients, so i had to think about what that entailed. with the reveal of Ovenwanderer, i found it a bit easier, but i was hesitant to make him look too much like him.

i kept the white icing and the scar, but outside of that i wanted to make something unique. why is the soul jam of freedom pink/red? because i said so.

i actually based more of his original design off the gajinka gingerbrave design i have! my most precious boy. i couldnt for the life of me figure out an outfit, so i went with what i knew.

this combo led the the first gb design! but later on i was a bit... unhappy with it. Every canon GB across the CR IP has a strange thing about wearing clothes, and because of that they shirt and pants began to grate on me.

so now, we have this beautiful boy.

the first thing i changed about him was the shape of his hair. it was difficult for others drawing him and for ME. I WAS IN THE TRENCHES. so i made the shape a lot more simple, but still kept his little antenna because <33 its cute <33

i was actually inspired by @summerdoddle's AJ!Gingerbrave, who had an outfit similar to Ovenwanderer's, and lead me to redesigning my GB just to give him a cooler outfit.

but it felt like copying, which i hate doing! so i still kept some things from his original outfit, like cuffs and collar, and gave him white accents on his little boots. its overed by the cape, but on his chest is another V-shaped red line and his second skull button.

the pink wrapping on GB's hand is another call back to my regular gb design. i tended to draw him with a bite taken out of his hand/missing fingers. this is due to him being bitten by the Shadow Witch before he escaped. its a headcanon i've always had and something i transferred over to HBAN as well.

the pink wrapping is to cover the bite mark, and also a connection to HBAN!White Lily Cookie, who got those same wrappings as a gift from Custard after her green ones were burned away after Chapter 10! (another thing that was sort of vagued by my less descriptive writing in early chapters. i stated he gave her "bandages")

speaking of custard, lets more onto him! i tried multiple things with custard because i wasn't sure exactly what i wanted to do with him. i thought, since he was going to be older, he'd be a bit more serious. i was gen fighting for my life trying to find a pose and expression for him. this guy...

i honestly cooked with this design. unlike with gingerbrave, i had never drawn custard outside of doddles and a comic i never posted. i had absolutely nothing to go on!!

so since i cooked so hard, his design didn't really change much! i gave him warmer colors and a more drawn in pose to capture his more solemn nature. i also took some inspo from @princessblue135's designs on him, giving a little orange vest!! i also gave him his original crown back and added a whipped cream fluff to his cape.

next up is Wizard Cookie, who went through a few changes before i settled on anything.

a lot of his original design has references to Stardust Cookie, especially his original scarf being from Stardust's cape and the sprinkles in his hair being from both Stardust and Moonlight as well. The design on his robes is also supposed to mimic the City of Wizards.

A fun non-moon thing is actually his staff. if you thought the shape looked familiar, that's because its based off of Millennial Tree Cookie's horns!

the reason for that is 1. because i wanted to, 2. because as a student of Moonlight Cookie, I think he'd have a heavy respect for the other Guardians, especially MTC, and would want to represent that respect.

Wiz's new design is ALSO inspired by PB's designs. PB my goat. i drew his design in a gajinka form not too long ago as well.

hello hello!! its a big giant post about my beasts and their designs! ill be going over the different inspirations and thoughts i had while making these designs, alongside the talks I had with my beta reader Bea about them!

Swapping out the Beasts

lets talk about my choices and such first. the beast have been in the works for longer than the ancients, actually!

first we'll cover the whos and whys! it took me a little bit to chose who exactly i wanted my beasts to be. i knew i wanted rye, pie (though at first it was going to be stardust), and bright right from the start, but it was figuring out silence and (at the time) deceit that was giving me trouble. before I settled on BR, i actually considered crepe to be custards beast, until my lovely bea pointed out that BR would be perfect for the role!!

cant exactly remember why we chose dozer in the first place, but i think it stemmed off of this joke. ironically, many things that happen in my stories tend to stem off of a joke.

but in the end, the biggest reason (outside of spoilers) i chose dozer to be silence was because of this phrase

Designs

okay now the stuff you actually want to see!

around the same time i was writing the dream a little dream of me arc, i was figuring out how our beasts would look! coincidentally, daldom was also our first look at BRC (or the lack thereof)

most of it was just musings at first, deciding that bright would be a fairy (later fae), pie would have her ribbons be snakes, raisin would be based off of mourning practices, etc. after that it was a matter of figuring out what exactly each beast would wear and stylistic choices.

when this blueberry pie costume for ovensmash came out, i was absolutely ecstatic because!! that was the look i was going for! ofc i didnt want to over complicate my designs so, while i was inspired, I made the outfit a more simple hanfu, which leaned more chinese than korean, but i thought it looked better! i really liked the colors they used for the costume so i did Yoink that, because it was pretty and the gradient of her original dress... wasn't my favorite. I also used similar colors for her eyecings, keeping her original color for the base.

i also loved the pose they gave her and i wanted her to be holding her snake, so I did my best to replicate it.

the reason i went with snakes is a reference to the story of the Garden of Eden and the snake who lead Eve to the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. Since she was the Archive of Knowledge, I thought it was fitting. and also its cute to theres that.

her soul jam placement took over the gem she already had. she was such a perfect fit she already had a place for me to put Futility. love u pie <33

with gingerbright, I later went with her being fae. now the thing about fae is that traditionally, they dont have wings, but without them she just looked sort of... empty? i was actually convinced in my decision to keep her wings after i was on a walk and i saw this gorgeous butterfly that had pink details on its wings. everybody say thank you random butterfly.

bright was... ridiculously hard to pin down for some reason? i went through about three different iterations before i finally came up with a design i liked.

i also tried multiple variations of her soul jam placement and shape, before just going with the ESC shape and crown because its recognizable and i liked it.

moving on to black raisin cookie. the first few ideas i had for her were overwhelmingly colorful and just didnt fit.

toraja is a colorful and beaded look, using a lot of reds. because brc was going to be purple, the colors would often clash, no matter what I tried.

antyeshti had the same sort of issue. the white and the flowers gave her a very wonky look and i struggled to make them fit the CRK sprite style. so i kept her very simple, relying more on what she already had with a few spruce ups! youre perfect as you are, BRC <33

the wings on her head, while matching a future awakened design for custard, are also in reference to Seraphim, who are often depicted with multiple sets of wings and eyes/are faceless.

her soul jam took on the design on her eyecing in her original form, both as a callback and for genuine lore reasons.

rye... is a cowboy. shes a cowboy! i like cowboys! im southern! ive had a lot of cowpoke characters in the past, so it was pretty easy to adapt her to my liking.

with rye, it was more a matter of adding details to her design, making her poncho more eye catching and balancing out the yellows (because in her og design its uneven and its pissed me off for YEARS!)

i couldnt find a good photo of chaps, so everyone say thank you fallout wiki (another favorite game of mine). i thought adding in little details like that would bring out the Soul Jam more, which I did make into a belt buckle, because cowboy.

i made her a lot sharper, with her shoes having longer spokes and having her hair be more wild and her braid shorter and less flowy. it gives her silhouette a more unstable look.

also! her eyecing is a reticle! an aiming apparatus!

finally... my sweetest boy. dozer. it is INSANELY difficult to turn a character with three colors into a beast cookie, let me tell you. i was genuinely hitting my head against my desk trying to figure it out. he doesnt even have normal eyecings (┬┬﹏┬┬)

the most i had in mind for him when it came to designs was that i wanted him to be in a night gown and i wanted him to look slightly similar to saint b.

it was @summerdoddles idea to cover dozer in moss! (amazing little doodle of him which inspired the better pose for his sprite.)

i was also have issues with colors, especially when it came to balancing the blue of his clothes with the moss. so i went looking for color ideas on the cr wiki (thank you cr wiki) and found this landmark from the wind archer update that had the perfect greens i was going for!

thanks again summer for being a great sport and listening to my ramblings. but the end result was absolutely perfect!!
