so when inputting my email to purchase something it autofilled the rest of my info, including my card number and address. apparently this info came from shop(dot)app. when checking, it also has my other card saved. i have never created a shop account. i have never used that website. how the fuck did it have my info saved

also for some reason the purchase confirmation email used my deadname which i have not put anywhere on the internet in over a year (except when legally required)

Any decision you make on your phone, whether it be a transaction, just browsing, playing a game, etc., is tracked, stored, and sold. As seen in the Netflix documentary "The Social Dilemma," it is hard to be away from your phone, and as with other addictions, people will do very questionable and out-of-character things to be reunited with it. Every seemingly minuscule detail about social media has been carefully crafted to grab and retain your attention. The only tool against it is awareness.
As can be seen, the power of big data and its usage in social media is massive. Too much of anything is dangerous and potentially harmful, especially something that takes up so much of our time and energy and is so normalized. There are many ethical debates about the way our data is used "against" us, and it is important to be aware of your personal usage. On a personal level, shutting off most notifications or using a secured browser are steps that can be taken to protect yourself. When it comes to businesses and society as a whole, increasing the awareness of how and why our data is collected/used may be the first step. Guidelines regarding information privacy should be established and followed inside every business, and ethical considerations need to be discussed frequently. One of the most important things to consider as a business is how your actions will truly effect the real people you are going after.
Progress is being made, but there is a long way to go before information privacy will truly be secure and trustworthy.

WhatsApp is adding more details to its privacy policy and flagging that information for European users, after Irish regulators slapped the chat service with a record fine for breaching strict EU data privacy rules.
Starting Monday, WhatsApp's privacy policy will be reorganized to provide more information on the data it collects and how it's used. The company said it's also explaining in more detail how it protects data shared across borders for its global service and the legal foundations for processing the data.
