The Super Bowl: Battle of the Commercials
by Hannah Carmichael
It’s almost that time of year again – Super Bowl time! If you love football as much as me, you are excited to watch a great game, eat awesome (fatty) food, and yes, watch the commercials. One of my favorite things about the Super Bowl are the commercials – and I’m not alone in this. The commercials during the Super Bowl are so widely popular that 30 second spots during the 2018 Super Bowl (LII) are selling for around 5 million dollars. Last year alone the Super Bowl (LI) had an average audience of 111.3 million viewers and 70% of U.S. homes with TVs were tuned in, making the coveted commercial spots so expensive.
With that many people viewing the commercials in addition to the game, the ads that are created need to be on brand and influential. The Super Bowl over the years has created some of the most influential ads, including the Snickers’ “You’re not you when you’re hungry”, Chrysler’s “Imported from Detroit”, and my personal favorite Budweiser’s “Puppy Love” (below).

There is always a wide range of ads that are shown during the Super Bowl, some that tug on your heartstrings (that PUPPY my lord), and others that make you laugh out loud. If an ad is done correctly, it can be talked about for years. I know I can’t wait to see which ads make the spotlight this year!
