She'd chewed her nail down to the quick. It wasn't a typical habit of hers--fidgeting, shooting her mouth off, sure. But Rachel had never been a nail biter. Guess desperate times called for a whole new set of unhealthy coping measures. 

Asir. The word settled in her brain like a fat toad in the swamp. Of course, the best place to look for information would've been the Council database, or maybe the vaults. But if Mika was right, and she had no real reason to lie, the Council would see the Asir nature as a threat. Or worse: an opportunity. 

She didn't know shit about angels. Two days ago, she would've said they were myth--something people told themselves at night so they could feel safe. She still wasn't sure she believed in them. What she did believe in, ironically, was magic, and hers was in all sorts of disarray. For the first time in her life, she'd met a being who was unaffected by her power. Didn't even blink. It scared her in ways she couldn't name, scared her enough that she'd taken her paid leave from CBI and headed east. 

To track down a couple hunters that the grapevine said had some experience with things from the great pearly white beyond. 

She had to be fucking insane. 

She'd chosen a public place for the meet and called from a burner cell. Precautions bred from years of paranoia. The highway ran just outside the small dinner, as did the ley line. Periodically, she reached for it, pulling its electric warmth into her mind. Like a goddamned security blanket.
