The relationship between infrastructure and economic growth was a central theme at the recent CII Conference on “Growing Opportunities from Free Trade Agreements,” attended by Mohit Bansal, CEO of GMI Infra.

I'm mostly copy-pasting a response I made to a Reddit post on the Watches subreddit from a year or so ago. The post was titled "Why Are British Watch Brands Gaining More Popularity Than American Ones Lately?" and the poster was only really considering relatively superficial marketing-related reasons for the phenomenon he perceived. As I point out below, there are far larger, far deeper, and more broadly-reaching reasons why he saw what he did.

Part of the issue is that there are no large American watchmakers left. Timex is not fully American anymore (it makes nearly all of its watches in the Philippines and only does R&D in the US; Timex Group BV is a Dutch-American joint concern). Bulova was bought by Citizen nearly two decades ago. Hamilton is actually the original watchmaker's Swiss subsidiary (which was originally the Swiss watchmaker Buren Watch Company). Elgin and Gruen have been resurrected as zombie brands to sell cheap/low-quality quartz and automatic/mechanical watches. Waltham was split into Waltham International (which traded hands for a few decades but now is owned by Antonio DiBenedetto, who has yet to do anything with it) and Waltham Aircraft Clock Co. (which is owned by Prime Time Clocks Inc. in Ozark AL), neither of which is currently active.

Another part of the issue is that for US-based watchmakers, they all have to compete on quality/craftsmanship, and the costs of doing so in the US are fairly high in comparison to doing it elsewhere. The alternative would be to compete on price and competitive specs but they haven't been able to compete on price against the likes of Timex, Seiko, Citizen, Swatch, the Chinese watches flooding markets worldwide, etc. for decades because that requires voluminous industrial output (for which the watchmaking industrial base doesn't exist in the US anymore and hasn't since at least the Quartz Crisis/Revolution). Importantly, there are no large-scale American movement manufacturers; all of the American watchmakers make their own on a very small scale (RGM), refurbish old movements from defunct American watchmakers (Frett Clockworks), or import their movements/assemble from imported components (nearly everyone else).

RGM (a legend in watchmaking, by the way) is probably the only American watchmaker who is head and shoulders above any currently active British watchmaker, but his watches also cost quite a bit more and are out of reach of the average consumer/watch enthusiast.

Movement manufacture is more important than I've suggested so far because to mark/brand a product (e.g. a watch) "American Made," all or nearly all of its components have to be made in the US with US-sourced materials. As you can imagine, as a result nearly all US-based watchmakers (i.e. Timex and the microbrands) can assert their roots/history or base in the US, but none of them can legally put "American Made" or "Made in the USA" on their watches.
