Take it from us, painting a wall isn’t as daunting as you might think. However, if you skip some steps in a bid to save time, you’ll be kicking yourself later. 

So, first things first. 

✅ Prep your wall: this is your key to a smooth finish. Paint can’t fill a hole and depending on the colour, it might highlight it more. Take the time, patch the holes, sand, wash your walls. Your future self will thank you later. 

✅ Work in small sections: avoid cutting-in the whole room as the edges will dry and give you a picture frame effect (unless that’s the look you’re going for). As the professional painters will tell you, it’s all about the wet edge. Work in sections of 1m x 1m and roll into your edge to blend the two together. 

✅ Roll in a W pattern: this will ensure an even spread of paint on your wall.

✅ Lay-off: and we don’t mean the chocolate. This technique ensures a smooth finish. Start at the top and lightly roll over your wet paint (without adding more) to even out the coating. 

✅ Don’t rush time: drying time is there for a reason. Paint for longevity, not the clock.

Choosing white paint seems pretty straightforward but the journey to choosing the right white for your space can make your head dizzy. At the end of the day, the key to choosing the right white is knowing which undertone you need for your space, warm (yellow) or cool (blue). Then of course there's the perfect neutral white which is its own thing.

These are the top things to consider when choosing the right white for your space:

1. Lighting - are you blessed with loads of natural light or a small amount?  

2. Is your home modern or traditional? 

3. Are you painting the interior or exterior?

4. The undertones of your existing flooring 

Traditional homes suit warmer shades of white and modern homes cooler whites. This is all linked with the type of lighting these types of homes typically have. 

Modern homes tend to have more windows and thus more natural light, while traditional or heritage style homes have less natural light so benefit from a warmer shade of white.
