⨠When Our Family Witnessed the TajāA Day Etched in Marble & Memory
We drove 3½ hours from Delhi, crossed the Yamuna Expressway, and arrived just in time. At 8 a.m., the Taj shimmeredāfrom pearl-grey to ivory white, a living jewel in morning light.
Inside the central chamber, sunlight filtered through delicate jaali screens. Deepak whispered,
āHe built a paradise so she wouldnāt be alone until he joined her.ā
Aarti and the girls held hands. Zoey traced semi-precious floral inlaysācrafted with lapis lazuli, coral, mother of pearl. This craftsmanship was hand-done over 350 years ago. The sorrow and devotion lodged in marble cut deeper than any guideās words.
At the western arcades, souvenir stalls hum. A marbleācarver, Azharuddin, pressed a tiny Taj keychain into Zoeyās handāāFor luckāāand refused payment. His family carved gemstones into the Taj for generations.
On the drive north, rain chased our route but paused. We paused under a neem tree and let the kids taste kebabs, spring rollsāflavors underlined by garden air and marble dust. Devesh joked,
āNext vacation must live up to emperors now.ā
We left as twilight softened the palace behind us. Yet the Taj remainedāetched in our hearts sharper than any image.
