India Invites Nominations for 2025 UNESCO Prize Recognizing Global Citizenship Education
The Indian National Commission for Cooperation with UNESCO (INCCU) has opened the nomination process for the 2025 UNESCO Prize for Global Citizenship Education, inviting submissions from eligible individuals and organizations. Interested candidates must be nominated through INCCU by August 18, 2025, for further evaluation and forwarding to UNESCO Headquarters in Paris by the final deadline of September 1, 2025.
Established with the support of the Republic of Korea, this biennial international award honors outstanding initiatives that champion the principles of Global Citizenship Education (GCED). The prize highlights programs that encourage intercultural dialogue, foster youth civic engagement, and enhance digital citizenship in today’s interconnected world.
Two winners will be selected—one youth-led organization and one individual, institution, or NGO—each receiving a cash award of $50,000 (approx. ₹42.7 lakh), along with a certificate and medal.
UNESCO Member States can recommend up to three nominees. Applications must be submitted in English or French via the official UNESCO online portal before midnight on September 1, 2025 (Paris time, UTC+1).
This initiative forms part of UNESCO's larger commitment to Sustainable Development Goal 4, particularly Target 4.7, which emphasizes education that promotes sustainability, human rights, and global citizenship. It also supports UNESCO’s strategic objective (2022–2029) of building inclusive and peaceful societies.
The award is financed by a $623,000 (₹5.31 crore) fund covering the six-year cycle from 2024 to 2029, including administrative expenses and prize distribution.
Final selections will be made by the UNESCO Director-General, based on recommendations from an independent five-member jury comprising experts in the field of global citizenship education.
For nomination guidelines or inquiries, applicants may contact the Prize Secretariat at [email protected].
