It was late when Phil’s flight finally landed. Florida was nice- really nice- but it was good to be home. Phil quickly hailed a taxi, Dan had offered to come pick him up at the airport, but Phil decided that he didn’t want Dan to pay to come all the way there just so he could turn around and go back home. Plus it was almost 7 AM, and if Dan wasn’t asleep by now then he definitely should be.
The taxi ride was fast, especially after the long flight, and before long he was shuffling through his bags trying to find the key the flats door. Phil briefly considered just knocking, but pushed the thought aside as it would mean waking Dan. Eventually though, he found the keys in one of his bags -at the very bottom, and quietly unlocked and opened the door, dragging his belongings in behind him only to dump them in front of the stairs.
“Dan?” he called out softly, barely above a whisper.
No reply.
Phil quickly scaled the stairs and heard a soft buzz coming from the T.V. in the lounge. He smiled to himself as he walked in the room to see Dan snoring quietly in front of some boring documentary about birds. Phil turned off the T.V. and the room was quickly filled with a dark silence; it was peaceful.
Phil sat beside Dan’s sleeping form on the couch, trying not to wake him. He wrapped his arms around Dan’s waist and brushed small kisses against his neck, and before long Dan was stirring.
“You’re home,” Dan said, not even bothering to open his eyes.
“Yeah,” Phil replied, smiling at the boy beside him.
Dan smiled too. He was still tired, and his eyelids felt heavy. But he opened his eyes so he could look up at phil.
“I missed you,” he whispered, his voice raspy from sleep.
“I missed you too, Danny, a lot.” Phil brushed a few strands of hair from Dan’s face, so that he could lean down and kiss him lovingly. The kiss ended long before their lips left each other, Phil hummed slightly, smiling. He was glad to finally be home.
“I tried to stay awake,” Dan yawned “but I guess-“
Phil placed a finger to Dan’s lips.
“It’s okay, Love, I understand. My flight was late anyways.”
Dan smiled again, closing his eyes and letting out a content sigh. He curled up towards Phil, his head on Phil’s lap now. His breath slowed and he fell asleep as his boyfriend stroked his hair and trailed his fingers up-and-down his arms soothingly.
The sun began to rise outside, and Phil found himself feeling a little bit sleepy. Usually after a trip he would be up through the night with jet lag, but something was different this time, he was exhausted. He carefully shook Dan awake, just so that they could go to their room. (He would have attempted to carry him, but Phil was tired and Dan was far too big for that.) Phil didn’t wake Dan up entirely, just enough so that he would carry himself (with a little help from Phil) up to their bedroom. Once they were there, Phil helped Dan to lay down and take of his unnecessary clothing; jeans, socks, his shirt, only leaving his grey boxers.
Dan sat up in bed, looking a bit confused in his drowsy state.
“Lay down, I’ll be back in a minute.”
Dan obliged, and Phil quickly removed his travelling clothes and slipped into bed beside Dan. He wrapped his arms around Dan’s middle and cuddled close to him, enjoying the familiar warmth being against Dan’s skin brought. It was rare that he would get to cuddle Dan, as Dan preferred to be big spoon and Phil himself didn't mind, so he was happy to take advantage of the opportunity to snuggle up against him. Their bodies made a warm cocoon of fluffy blankets and tangled limbs, and in that moment, Phil was happier than he had been all week.
“Good night, my love,” Phil whispered against Dan’s ear. There was no reply, Dan was already sound asleep. But a small smile twitched at his lips and he snored. Phil was finally home, and that night they both slept sound for the first time since he had left.
