I realized that, taken out of context, this is a very relatable conversation
Lmao at Garak assuming the Boy Who Cried Wolf story ends with the boy successfully getting attention for his lie (clever lad! A charming story 🙂) in the episode where he blows up his own shop for attention

what if... we kissed on the space dock...
Garak's shop explosion but Bigger and More Flames and Kira shouting for help to hold back Julian from running into Certain Death and Julian desperately trying to weigh up if he can risk using his enhancements to escape the officers holding him and struggling against them until it finally gets through to him that even if he gets free, he can't survive going through that wall of flames and if he couldn't then Garak couldn't and all of a sudden he's just gone limp and Kira is helping him sit down against a wall before going off to aid the firefighters and he's distantly aware that some people are headed to the infirmary having been caught in the blast and he knows he should get up and help but for some reason he just can't, hes just stuck there, shivering
And ofc Garak is okay in the end, he was just being as flashy as possible (while the explosion was very dramatic at front-of-house, the back of his shop was fairly untouched - including him. Which helpfully serves as more "evidence" that the "assassin out to get him" doesn't usually use bombing as their method)
But this time when it's revealed he blew up his own shop, people are far more angry with him bc if Kira hadn't been there Julian absolutely would have ran into the flames heedless of the risk and while Julian's too relieved Garak is okay to be properly angry for the meantime, everyone else is very much clamoring to yell at Garak for putting their Doctor at risk. And Garak ofc would never have conceived of that as being a potential problem because surely even Doctor Bashir wouldn't be such a self-sacrificing fool for Garak and has no idea how to take it or feel about it.
(Making it in some ways easier for him to accept Tain's offer and hide in it, he doesn't want to have to think about his doctor he wants to bury all of that...)
Kay I can't get over "Improbable Cause"/"The Die is Cast" because Garak stabs Odo in the back without a moment's hesitation the second he gets the invite to return to the Obsidian Order/Tain/Cardassia/Whatever, and then he tortures Odo nearly to death looking for info on the Dominion and all he gets out of Odo is that Odo really wants to go home to his people and join the Great Link despite Everything, but when Odo gets the chance to go home, despite how much he wants to, he sticks to his morals and refuses.
So Odo gets stabbed in the back, and tortured into revealing a shameful secret. He should kick Garak out on his ass and never speak to him again, but he doesn't.
So whereas Garak took the chance to go home without hesitation, Odo refused his own chance to go home with equal conviction, so Odo could sit on his moral high horse and judge Garak for giving into temptation, but he doesn't.
Odo might not forgive Garak for what he did, but he understands why he did it enough to stick around and be his friend despite it all. Like, the guy really says "hey you did a really shitty thing to me but I understand, let's get breakfast sometime."
Something about that just hits, you know?
