How do I seem to you?
"As leaders, we want to know how others see us. We can do this by watching out for clues from other people."
We’ve talked about impression management as one of the pieces of our decision rulers. We have a vision of how we want to be perceived by others, and most everything we do and say is calculated to ensure that others see us in that way. ICH WILL SO WIE ICH SEIN (I WANT TO BE JUST LIKE ME) is a hand-made book which studies the concepts of authenticity and self-trolling, as well as mechanisms of impression management.
An online version is available with Spanish translations of the original in German.
The project was presented at the 2017 annual show of HfG Offenbach in a live performance by Heidi Merkel, a fictitious drag character, reciting her reflexions on authenticity; furthermore a sound installation formed part of the exhibition.

Subway Conversations
Most days on my way to work, the subways are crowded and thus all passengers are jammed so close together. Honestly, I try to not eavesdrop into conversations, but sometimes others broadcast their lives to everyone around them, and that’s exactly what happened to me one morning this week.
Purse on one shoulder, a cup of joe in one hand, I tried to mind my business but ended up listening to a conversation about a leader in an organization/team from what I gathered. They were complaining about a male coworker who didn’t live up to what they considered a leader should be. This made me think about how the traits and characteristics of leadership have evolved throughout the years.
In the past, leaders were male. Mainly of tall height, great posture, and a certain tone. All characteristics summing up to a male figure who basically acts, portrays, and speaks like someone in command.
While there are more and more women joining the workforce, they are still underrepresented in upper management. In comparison, in the education field, women are dominating representation in graduation.
No matter the gender, impression management should be introduced to students and junior employees fairly early on in their careers. This is part of what we call our personal brand management. How we communicate with others, our body language, how we dress represent who we are. Today, there is no checklist for specific leadership criteria. A woman can be a leader. Not all leaders have to be 6 feet and above. Impression management has significance. So does self-awareness.
