*   pre-calamity;   this   is   set   before   the   final   memory   in   the   breath   of   the   wild   screenshots,   set   up   until   the   day   before   zelda's   seventeenth   birthday.   this   is   a   zelda   still   within   the   clutches   of   tradition   and   monarchy   -   she   is   not   her   own   person   but   an   extension   of   the   goddess   hylia.   she   lacks   all   individuality   and   personage;   she   merely   exists   to   save   the   glorious   empire   of   hyrule.

hylia   and   maidenhood   -   zelda's   relationship   with   the   goddess   is   strained.   her   feud   with   the   goddess   is   an   open   secret   within   the   walls   of   castle   town,   and   it   is   generally   advised   for   those   who   are   aware   to   keep   the   secret   or   risk   imprisonment   and   death   at   the   hands   of   the   royal   family.   zelda   refuses   to   acknowledge   her   own   hatred   of   the   goddess,   but   the   bitterness   bleeds   a   very   rich   gold. autonomy   -   zelda   does   not   have   any   true   autonomy   over   herself.   when   faced   with   the   prosperous   nature   of   the   kingdom   resting   on   the   central   field   of   hyrule,   she   is   not   even   of   royal   accord.   simply   put;   zelda   does   not   know   how   to   exist   as   an   individual   -   she   merely   exists   as   a   failure   of   the   royal   family   and   the   consequences   of   removing   hylia's   divine   people   (the   sheikah)   from   royal   business. the   wild   -   this   is   the   only   place   where   zelda   has   any   inkling   of   freedom.   the   champions   and   zelda   are   what   she   would   consider   her   family   -   a   particular   closeness   is   found   between   zelda   and   the   champion   urbosa,   as   she   was   a   close   friend   of   her   mother.   the   further   zelda   is   away   from   castle   town,   the   more   her   personhood   is   bestowed   upon   her.   it   is   clear,   like   the   silent   princess,   that   zelda   can   only   survive   in   the   wild.

*   post   calamity;   this   is   set   during   the   one   hundred   years   that   pass   between   the   events   of   the   calamity   and   the   time   that   link   awakens   in   the   shrine   of   resurrection.   in   my   particular   portrayal   of   the   games'   events,   the   timeline   between   when   link   wakes   up   in   the   shrine   and   when   link   destroys   ganon   is   ten   months   -   link's   determination   to   free   zelda   of   her   self-made   prison   drives   his   own   progression   faster   than   expected.

vengeance   and   righteousness   -   zelda   is   angry.   in   a   poetic   twist   to   an   autonomy,   zelda   once   more   sheds   her   humanity   for   a   twist   of   divinity   and   the   rawest   form   of   girlhood;   the   anger   that   comes   with   the   fleeting,   feeble   nature   of   being   just   a   girl.   this   is   zelda   without   her   moralities;   she   even   sheds   her   physical   form   for   but   a   chance   to   hold   him   down,   her   sheer   righteous   anger   the   only   thing   tethering   her   to   this   plane   after   the   loss   of   her   flesh.  malice   and   gloom   -   malice   never   quite   leaves   zelda.   not   enough   remains   in   her   to   be   of   consequence,   enough   remains   to   leave   her   with   a   tongue   of   barbs   and   indignation.   zelda   is   not   quite   whole   -   she   never   will   hold   the   same   complete   purity   that   was   expected   as   a   maiden   of   the   goddess   hylia.   her   disdain   towards   existence   itself   manifests   as   a   woman   who   is   not   the   meek   princess   she   had   once   been. the   triforce   -   zelda   carries   the   complete   triforce,   though   it   is   unknown   if   it   has   been   passed   matrilineal   or   manifested   within   her   as   a   gift   from   the   goddesses   of   creation   -   the   immortal   dragons   she   would   one   day   live   and   breathe   sisterhood.   the   triforce   leaves   zelda   with   a   power   infinite   and   divine,   much   to   her   dismay.   the   triforce   manifested   in   gold   -   her   golden   hair,   the   freckles   that   don   her   expression,   and   the   raw   power   that   surrounds   the   former   princess.

*   peace;   the   time   between   breath   of   the   wild   (2017)   and   tears   of   the   kingdom   (2023).   in   my   personal   interpretation   of   the   timeline   between   the   two   games,   seven   in-game   years   pass   between   the   two   games.   this   means   that   zelda   is   twenty-four   years   of   age,   and   has   a   permanent   residence   in   hateno   village   when   she   is   not   traveling   around   greater   hyrule.

the   empire   of   hyrule   -   zelda   does   not   deign   to   restart   the   kingdom   of   hyrule.   years   of   neglect   and   self   sacrifice   on   zelda   alone   is   enough   for   the   basis   of   discarding   the   kingdom,   but   zelda   firmly   believes   that   the   kingdom   of   hyrule   of   itself   is   something   of   an   imperalist   plight   that   wishes   to   impose   its   will   on   peoples   who   can   govern   themselves.   the   bloodline,   royal   and   hylia   divine,   will   die   with   zelda. zelda   and   conation   -   zelda   has   chosen   her   own   path.   though   compassion   and   a   drive   to   better   her   peoples   through   technological   advancement   (and   encouraging   them   to   think   outside   a   monarchy),   a   mean   streak   has   arose   as   remnants   of   the   malice   that   plagued   her   for   a   century.   she   can   be   known   to   snap   and   insult   when   pushed   far   enough,   and   has   no   signs   of   stopping   any   time   soon. survivor's   guilt   -   it   isn't   enough   to   say   that   zelda   struggles   with   the   complexities   that   come   with   realizing   you   were   not   only   the   saving   grace   but   also   the   indirect   cause   of   an   entire   nation's   downfall   (no   matter   how   justified   a   twisted   part   of   her   ascertains).   zelda's   entire   being   exists   to   make   the   future   better   than   where   she'd   left   it,   and   thus   translates   into   overworking   herself   as   if   to   try   and   justify   her   existence   and   its   meaning.

*   an   immortal   dragon;   it   is   unknown   how   long   has   passed   -   though   there   is   a   general   estimation   of   there   being   at   least   twenty   thousand   years   between   the   past   and   the   present,   but   zelda   remains   without   girlhood   for   many   more   years   than   that.   the   past   was   but   a   footnote   for   zelda;   time   spent   with   the   researcher   mineru   with   only   one   purpose   -   to   get   home   to   her   people.

immortality   -   dragon   immortality   is   a   whirlpool   of   sacrifice,   infinities,   and   an   intense   loneliness.   it   is   self   immolation   in   the   sense   of   betraying   everything   that   one   strives   for   in   the   world   -   self-actualization,   individualism,   and   the   peace   at   a   life   well   lived.   it   is   a   writhing   uncomfortable   sense   of   missing   something,   but   never   being   able   to   remember   what   you   miss.   zelda   remembers   every   single   second   of   her   long,   grueling   divinity   and   the   inherent   disappointment   that   came   with   such   an   existence. sisterhood   -   there   is   an   indescribable   kinship   zelda   will   always   feel   with   the   dragons   -   they   are   sisters   four,   punished   by   acts   of   sacrifice   long   since   thrown   out   by   hyrule   at   large.   they   are   the   closest   things   to   her   that   could   possibly   understand   her   circumstances,   they   are   the   closest   living   beings   to   possibly   sympathize   with   her   turmoil.   as   of   post-calamity,   zelda   follows   the   goddesses   three   as   her   faith   over   the   existence   of   hylia. sacrifice   and   consequence   -   zelda   comes   back   wrong.   as   mentioned   here,   the   princess   has   permanent   attributes   that   are   uncomfortable   to   behold,   painful   reminders   that   she   is   not   of   this   land   and   never   will   be   again.   there   are   days   that   are   good   and   days   that   leave   the   princess   barely   able   to   hold   on,   to   untangle   golden   threads   as   she   begs   and   pleads   to   figure   out   where   she   is   and   why   she   is   being   punished.
