Meteors and Blizzards
Source: National Geographic Kids
On this day in 1799, in Impington in Cambridgeshire, the most extraordinary snow storm occurred. Not only was the blizzard intense, it was accompanied by a blazing meteor terrifyingly slicing through the night sky. The unfortunate Elizabeth Woodcock was caught in the open by this freak weather event. She was only half a mile from home when the meteor dramatically lit up the night, causing Elizabeth’s horse to bolt in fright, throwing the woman to the ground. Scared and disorientated, Elizabeth hunkered down best she could and fell asleep. When she awoke she found herself trapped in a snow cave. Elizabeth lived on nuts and snuff - the only edible items in her possession - for 48 hours before she was rescued. If only this tale of drama and survival could have had a happy ending. However, Elizabeth never recovered from her ordeal. The frostbite she sustained while in the snow cave eventually resulted in the loss of all her fingers and toes and, tragically, she died in the following July.
Fine houses in Impington Sat 5 Aug 20: this is Squirell Cottage, 11 Water Lane. It's what I like about H&I. There are links with the community's past but they don't dominate and turn us into a heritage zone.
Blast from the past Tue 30 Jul 19: found by our new parish clerk clearing out the stock room. 1966 was the year I started at Uni so it's a long time ago even for me!
