When you want to have power on a project, you want to use an impact driver. It delivers a combination of rotation with an intense downward force. This also helps to eliminate stripped screws and the need for pilot holes. Also, impact drivers can be used for large screws and bolts with precision.

With their hammer-action, they are also able to drill holes when using a hex shank bit. And of course, impact drivers can act like standard rotary screwdrivers.

Impact drivers are great tools for strong materials though not as good a choice for softer materials. These are where standard drills may be used with slightly better results. That may be the only advantage of cordless screwdrivers over impact drivers.

Power Source

One option you have when choosing an impact driver is whether to get one with a cord or a rechargeable battery. For long term use with consistent power, you may want the A/C corded option. For convenience, easy travel, working on ladders or in tight spaces, and short term use, the cordless is your option.

Another nice feature with a cordless impact drivers use less power for the job, due to the combined action, so battery life tends to last longer than standard cordless screwdrivers. Other factors to consider with regards to choosing an impact driver include:

 • Torque – This is the power of the tool. This is about the pressure applied to the nail or bolt. The greater the torque (in pounds per inch), the greater the power.

• Battery charge – Some batteries can last as much as 30% or more of other batteries. Usually batteries come in NiMH or Li-ion. NiMH batteries tend to lose their charge faster than Li-ion with Li-ion batteries being more expensive because they are lighter and hold a charge longer.

• Speed – For top power, you want to combine speed and torque. Speed, measured in RPMs, is related to the number of spins – or how fast the bit will go in the course of a minute.

• Impact rate – These are the hammers – or blows per minute. With a driver, it’s a big part of what you are looking for.

 Other factors that are nice about impact drivers are that generally, they are light weight, work fast, and offer little kick. With all of these features, impact drivers are great tools for working on things like building decks, sheds, fences, working on vehicles, and more. Obviously, the more powerful and more features you want, the greater the price of the unit will likely be.

 For cordless units, batteries range from 9.6 volt up through 24 volt and of course, correspond to the type of project that can be done with it. For instance, drivers with 9.6 volt batteries can drive screws and assemble furniture. Though for building decks or applying simple fasteners, you may want a 14 volt or higher. And for these heavy duty jobs where durability is important, go for the max with 24 volt.

 Impact drivers are often much noisier than standard drills so as part of your safety equipment, besides eye protection, you may want earmuffs or plugs. And definitely keep your hands and lose materials away from the drill bit and shaft.
