Chapter 152 - Leaving, Leading, Living

“Will I move on? Will I go home?”

“I cannot answer that for you. Spirits do not die like mortals. Where one energy ends, another begins. Shall I stay with you for a while?”

“If you like.” There was no time, no measurable beat, either of her heart or the pulse of the earth. But Wisdom being with her made it all right. Made it companionable. She could feel her now, her presence like a hug, like a hand holding hers. So light, so insubstantial. But so present. She didn’t want to let go. “I'm not ready.”

“We rarely are, da'len.”

I’ve been kind of off the grid with the WIP Wednesday circles but I’m done with my grading, the quarter is over, and now I’m back to just research and writing and art for the rest of time!

Still working on Imogen for CrackingLamb and Gethrael for Lalaen. Doing two different art styles here and it’s been very fun to get back into them.

Chapter 142 - Cranes, Serpents and Wolves

Seronna smirked.  “There are more mysteries to ponder upon this earth than can be found in ages wandering through the Lady's Sky. Some remain so, some do not.  I will not pressure you to answer, daughter of Stone-Bear Hold.  But I would offer wisdom, if you will hear it.”

Across the hut, Solas stiffened.  His spine went very straight and his head turned just slightly, one pointed ear and the gleam of his side-eye landing on them.  Seronna noticed as soon as Imogen did, her smirk folding her cheek as it spread.  

“There is a tale,” she said, still speaking to Imogen but keeping Solas in view, “an old tale from before the sundering of the Alamarri into their separate tribes.  A great serpent circled the base of Korth's mighty mountain, lying in wait to attack or defend, depending on who's telling it.  Here in the south, we say that a bird descended to devour it.  It is why I bear the mark of the crane upon my door.  For cranes are well known to hunt snakes, to stamp them out until no threat remains.  Do you know this tale?”

“I know a version of it,” Imogen said.

An army had come to Skyhold. A red one.

As she watched, the portcullis dropped with a distant clang and the drawbridge that connected Skyhold to the mountain trail began to lift. The clarion warning was cut off in a flurry of arrows and magic as the mass advanced onto the bridge, but it had been enough to do its job. They were sealed in. Unless Corypheus himself showed up with his dragon, they could outlast a siege. Granted, she didn’t think they would get that lucky. He was coming. She had no doubt of it.

She didn’t bother to stare, but went back into her room to don her armor and grab her bow. She cursed the number of stairs she had to go down just to reach the Great Hall, but managed them without tripping in her haste. Bull and Dorian were already waiting for her, armed and ready. Battle plans would come, but first things first.

“Get the civilians below. Into the old ballroom. Solas can direct them to safe places from there. There’s a ton of passages and ways to escape. He knows them all.”

“On it, Boss,” Bull said, taking off at a dead run. He could move astonishingly fast when he wanted to, and few would dare get in his way when he did.

“D, you and Vivienne see how many mages are in the tower that are battle ready. I would assume there’s Venatori out there.”

“Yes. It’s Haven all over again, isn’t it?”

“Hopefully not.”

Chapter 147 - Here Lies the Abyss

“I think it’s time to level the playing field,” she said, trying to keep the gasping out of her voice as she caught her breath. He raised an eyebrow at her, but she didn’t think that was because he doubted he could do it.

“It would draw attention.”

“My love, we already have the attention of something far worse than any simple demon.  It’s already calling up reinforcements.  What can you do that would give us an edge?  We need to outwit the Nightmare if we’re going to be successful.”

He hummed a small sound.  It might have been agreement.  He looked around the terrain, assessing it.  After a minute – and after the pair of them fought off a few fearlings from the latest wave – he shook his head.  “I cannot take control of this region, the Nightmare’s hold on it is too strong.  However I can…”

She met his gaze and figured she knew what he was thinking.  It was why she’d brought him, after all.  And why she’d brought those companions who knew who he was.  “Do it.  The momentary shock from the others won’t last longer than it takes for them to see you score a hit against the Nightmare.”

Chapter 151 - Eleven Arrows

Solas cast barriers on them both and then sent a mind blast into the sky. Corypheus took the blast and it broke his concentration as he hovered, but he only dropped a few feet before regaining the levitation spell. He lowered himself until he was close enough to speak, his arms outspread as if he was expecting adulation.

“You have been most successful in foiling my plans. But let us not forget what you are. A thief, in the wrong place at the wrong time. An interloper. A gnat. You are not even of this world. We shall prove here, once and for all, which one of us is worthy of godhood.”

“I don’t need godhood to defeat you, Corypheus!"

Chapter 149 - Final and First**

So soon after defeating the Nightmare, Imogen didn’t want to be in the Fade again. She couldn’t answer Morrigan’s questions on how Kieran had changed the exit of the Eluvian, nor did she try to direct them to the place she knew they would find him. She was working too hard to keep her revulsion at seeing this shade of green again at bay.

And of course, the route was pre-planned and led them straight to Flemeth and the boy anyhow. She was kneeling at his feet and a glow of magic hung between them. Imogen had never noticed before that Kieran was the one doing it, not Flemeth.

“Mother!” he cried out joyfully when he saw her. Imogen stood back and waited for the rest of the scene to play out.

“Mother,” Morrigan growled.

“Now, isn’t this a surprise?” Flemeth said, getting back to her feet. Her golden eyes landed on Imogen and took on a gleam she thought was almost cruel. “You have upset many plans, my dear Inquisitor.”

“I did what I thought was right,” Imogen said.

“So did I, once.”
