i was talking to my boyfriend yesterday about the ideas of patriotism in the countries we grew up in
he described estonian patriotism beautifully, he said it’s a “quiet sense of belonging”
and i thought, american patriotism is whatever the fuck the opposite of that is
we had a discussion about “if you went to a random restaurant. lets say hesburger. and you started singing mu isamaa on minu arm, would people join in?” and we decided the answer to that is, “well, sometimes maybe? I guess it depends.” and i laughed, because in america it does not depend. i could go to any public establishment and start chanting “U! S! A! U! S! A! and multiple people would join in. people would probably even do it at a funeral
