একবার একটা খবর বেরিয়েছিলো।
একটা বাংলাদেশ-চীনা প্রকল্পে কিছু চীনা গবেষক ও কারিগর এসেছে বাংলাদেশে। তারা সবজি কেনাকাটা করতে যায় বাজারে। তো, খবরটার শিরোনাম ছিল অনেকটা এই রকম (ঠিক মনে নেই, তবুও বলছি): "চীনাদের কাছে সবজি বিক্রি করতে করতে চীনা শিখে গেলেন বাংলাদেশী বাঙালি বিক্রেতা"।
মানে হলো, ঐ চীনা মানুষেরা বাংলাদেশের বাজারে এসে চীনা ভাষায় দোকানদারের সাথে কথা বলে কেনাকাটা করে। খবরটায় বিক্রেতাদের চীনা ভাষার জবানবন্দিও নেয়া হয়েছিল, যেখানে বিক্রেতারা চীনা ভাষায় সবজির নাম বলছিল।
খবরটা অনেক তোষামুদি ছিল, যেখানে অনেক রঙচঙে ভাষায় দেখানো হয়েছে যে বিক্রেতাদের এই চীনা ভাষা শেখাটা বিশাল কিছু। এক দৃষ্টি দিয়ে অবশ্যই সেটা বিশাল কিছু— সবজি বিক্রি করতে করতে তারা চীনা শিখেছে। কিন্তু আরেক দৃষ্টি দিয়ে এটা খুবই অপমানজনক।
আমাদের দেশ থেকে ধরুন আপনি বিদেশ যাবেন। হোক সেটা চীন, আমেরিকা, জাপান, কোরিয়া, সৌদি আরব বা অন্যান্য মধ্যপ্রাচ্যের দেশ। সেখানে যেতে হলে আপনাকে অবশ্যই তাদের ভাষা শিখতে হবে। আমাদের প্রবাসীরা শেখেন, কাজও পান সেসব দেশে। কিন্তু চিন্তা করে দেখুন, বাংলাদেশে আসতে গেলে আপনার কি কখনো বাংলা শিখতে হয়? এই যে একটু আগে যে খবরটা বললাম, সেখানে ঐ চীনারা কিন্তু বাংলার "ব"-ও জানে না; কিন্তু ঠিকই এসেছে বাংলাদেশ থেকে মুনাফা অর্জন করতে। তাদের দেশে গেলে তাদের ভাষা শিখতে হবে, আর তারা আমাদের দেশে এলেও আমাদেরই তাদের ভাষার সাথে মানিয়ে নিতে হবে— এতো চরম অপমানজনক। যে ভাষার জন্য মানুষ জীবন দিয়েছে, তার এ হাল কেন??
কারণটা খুব সোজা। একজনের সাথে আমার কথা হয়েছে, সে জিজ্ঞেস করেছিল, "তোমার কোন বিষয়টা পড়তে সব থেকে ভালো লাগে?" আমি উত্তর দিলাম, "বাংলা"। সাথে সাথে মুখ বাঁকালো সে, যেন আমি তাকে গালি দিয়েছি।
"কীহ্, বাংলা?! ইংরেজি হলে তাও তো বুঝতাম!!"
যখন আমি আশ্চর্য হয়ে জিজ্ঞেস করলাম কেন, সে বললো, "বাংলা পড়ে কী হবে? একে তো কঠিন, আর কাজেও লাগে না।"
এই তো ভুল।
বাঙালিরাই বাংলার কদর দেয় না। ইংরেজি না পড়লে দেশে চাকরি নেই। বাংলা বিষয়ে যারা স্নাতক করে, তারা শিক্ষক ছাড়া তেমন কিছু হতে পারেন না। বাংলাদেশে আসতে বিদেশিদের বাংলা শেখার কোনো দরকার নেই। জাপানে যেতে হলে আপনার অবশ্যই এন৪ পাশ করতে হবে, চীনে গেলে এইচএসকে, আমেরিকা গেলে আইইএলটিস— কিন্তু বাংলাদেশে আসতে কি আপনার কোনোকিছু পাশ করতে হয়? স্কুলগুলোতে কি বাংলায় দক্ষতা আনা হয়? উচ্চশিক্ষা অর্থাৎ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে পড়তে গেলে দেখা যায়, সব বই ইংরেজিতে লেখা। বাংলার কোনো স্থান নেই। বাচ্চারা বাংলা বই বা বাংলা লেখা পড়তেই পছন্দ করে না। ইংরেজি বই-ই তাদের কাছে "কুল"। (এই কুল কিন্তু বরই না!!)
বিদেশিদের বাংলা শেখার জন্য ভালো কোনো অ্যাপস নেই। এমনকি যে ডুয়োলিংগো ইউটিউবে বিজ্ঞাপন দিতে দিতে দর্শককে কাহিল করে দেয়, সেখান থেকেও বিদেশিরা বাংলা শিখতে পারেন না। ছোটবেলাতেই বাচ্চার মাথায় ঢোকানো হয় যে বাংলা শিখে কাজ নেই। এখনকার বাবা-মা বাচ্চাকে "মা" বা "বাবা" শেখান না, শেখান "ড্যাড" আর "মম"!! এখনকার বাচ্চারা শব্দ শিখতে গেলে ইংরেজি শব্দ প্রথমে শেখে, বাংলা না!! আমার নিজের এক আত্মীয়ের ছেলে হলুদ রং বা লাল রং চেনে না; চেনে ইয়েলো আর রেড!!
বর্তমানে নতুন অনুবাদকেরা আর লেখকেরা অকারণে তাদের বইয়ে ইংরেজি লিখে রাখেন। বাংলায় এমনকি কোনো শুদ্ধ বানান-সংশোধকও নেই!! বাঙালিরা, সে হোক বাংলাদেশী বা ভারতীয়, ঠিক মতো বাংলা লিখতে পারে না।
বাংলার ভালো কোনো কীবোর্ড নেই, একমাত্র বিজয় আর রিদ্মিক ছাড়া। কিন্তু কেউ এখন এগুলো ব্যবহারও করতে চায় না। ইংরেজিই "কুল"।
যে ভাষার জন্য রক্ত গেছে, সবার কাছে কেবল এই একটাই অনুযোগ, সেই ভাষার এই হাল কী করে হলো?
যে ভাষায় লিখে গেছেন রবীন্দ্রনাথ, নজরুল, মধুসূদন, বঙ্কিম, মানিক, বিভূতিভূষণ, দুই বুদ্ধদেব, মীর মশাররফ হোসেন— সেই বাংলার এই দশা কেন??
এই দায় কি পুরো বাঙালি জাতির নয়?
এখনো সময় আছে ঘুরে দাঁড়ানোর। বাংলা লিখি ভালো করে, শেখাই অন্যদের। বাঙালিরা যখন কদর দিচ্ছে না, তাহলে বিদেশিদের বাংলা আগে শিখাই। বিশ্ব গ্রামের এই যুগে বাংলা যদি বিদেশিরা না শেখে, বাংলা বাঁচবে না বেশিদিন। তাই, বাংলাকে কঠিন, দুর্বোধ্য বা অকাজের মনে না করে শিখি আর শেখাই সবাইকে। এটা প্রত্যেক বাঙালির কর্তব্য।

Once, I heard a news.
Some Chinese people came in Bangladesh for a joint project between China and Bangladesh. These Chinese people spoke Chinese with the salespersons. Those salesperson got used to it, and even learnt the meaning of those Chinese words. The news was like: "Salesperson can speak Chinese now for the customers!!"
In the news, the reporter marked it as something really big. Of course it is big, the salesmen could learn Chinese by selling his merchandise. It is appreciatable. But in another way, it's also disgracing.
If you ever need to go abroad for work from Bangladesh, regardless of the country— America, Saudi Arabia or other middle-east countries, Japan, China— you have to learn their language. But just think it, does any foreigners have to learn bangla when they come to Bangladesh?? You need to pass JLPT N4 for Japan, HSK for China, IELTS for America, but is there any proficiency test for Bangla???
The news I told just now, those Chinese people do not even know a single letter from Bangla. When we go to their country, we need to learn their language; but when they come to our country, we have to learn their language too?! It's disgracing and disturbing!!!
The only complaint is, why the language for which people sheded blood, is in this condition?
The answer is simple.
Once I met someone, who asked me which subject I like most to read. When I answered them it was Bangla, they frowned at me, as if I had cursed them.
"What?! Bangla? It it was English, it will be acceptable!"
I felt terribly humiliated. When I asked them why, they told, "What will you gain from Bangla??? It's hard and useless".
This is the mistake.
Bengalis don't show respect to Bangla. If you do not learn English, there won't be any job. Bangla graduates cannot become anything else beside a teacher. Bengali kids don't even like to read Bangla books or prose. To them, English is "cool".
If you come to Bangladesh ,you don't need any test to pass. Bangla doesn't have good spell-checker. No good keyboard except Bijoy and Ridmik. New gen people even don't want to use them! There are no good apps to learn Bangla. Even in Duolingo, who disturbs us all time to learn a language with numerous boring ads, does not have any system to learn Bangla.
Parents nowadays don't teach their children Bangla as their first language. They don't call them "Baba" (father) or "Ma" (mother); they call them Dad and Mom!!!
The son of one of my relatives does not know "Holud" (yellow) or "Lal" (red), he only gets the English word!
If you go to university, no books in Bangla. All books are written in English. Even no one care to translate them in Bangla. Nowadays, new writers and translators use too much unnecessary English words. There are no good spell-checker in Bangla. No indian or Bangladeshi Bengali can write Bangla properly.
The language which was gained by blood, in which Rabindronath, Nazrul, Manik, Bibhutubhushon, Mir Mosharrof Hossain, two Buddhodebs, Madhusudon, Bangkim created countless masterpiece, why is it in this condition? Isn't it Bengali's for this?
We still have time. Let's learn Bangla and teach them others. If Bengalis don't give Bangla respect, then teach the foreigners who would respect it. In this time of global village, our Mather tongue had to be presented before whole world, or it will soon be extinct.
Let's throw the impression out the window that Bangla is hard and useless. Let's cherish it in a way that it deserves. It is the duty of all Bengalis.
