Someone having a bad day so you get their favorite snack for them. Technically you are trying to "manipulate" them into feelings better.

If you want to get closer with someone you try and find common ground and use that to make yourself part of the same group, which can make them view you in a more positive light. Technically this is also "manipulation"

You want to come across as put together for a job interview so you buy new clothing, or just in general formal wear. Again technically you are "manipulating" people's view of you.

This is manipulation in that you are changing something: a person's mood, a relationship, your image.

This is all different from "psychological manipulation" which is often underhanded, benefits only the manipulator and is used to violate people's boundaries and in the case of propaganda (which is a whole other can of moral worms) alter beliefs and through those, discount their autonomy.

So when people claim all this shit that hurts no one is manipulation? they are technically correct but what they are identifying is basic building blocks of how socialization works in humans, and mistaking it for the psychological definition.
