the word comes out a little too fast. a little more clipped than he intended. it isn’t as if he can really lie about it. not when his face is covered in dark bruises. there is a lot more beneath his sweater but given the way she is looking at his features, he has a feeling it would only make her reaction worse. it’s just a part of his job, however. there is nothing either of them can do to change that. so there is no point in focusing on it. it’s just another reminder of the difference between himself and normal citizens. everyone else just sees a sleeve. something they can discard when they get too battered. but he has one body and he has to live through this shit. he has to take it when his bones shatter and his flesh is marred. he is more likely to become all machine and synthetic before he’d have the privilege of seeing his body that way.

     It was a rare thing to find, the kindness of strangers, even rarer still to find someone who had been as willing to help as she was. Most people wouldn’t lie to the cops to throw them off his scent, after all. 

     He supposes he should be worried about the ease of which she seemed to lie and put on an act, but he really didn’t have the right to complain or ask any sort of questions.

They did it. Somehow. Daniel still wasn’t entirely sure why he’d been spared when the rest of his family had met an explosive ending. He knows some part of him should feel remorse. But it’s hard to when they were all monsters. How could he feel bad that it was all just over? Even his brother who he’d thought was spared from the madness that was their birthright had turned out to be just like them. That was the only thing he could really mourn.
