[OC] No phone, no computer
So on Thursday, I made the decision that I wasn’t going to use my phone or computer at all on Friday the 30th. Immediately this creates an issue because my phone is my alarm clock in the morning, so I slept really nervously about not waking up in time for work. When I got to work, I didn’t have anything to listen to music with when I was watering, as well as walking to our class from work. But I appreciated the natural environment of sounds in everyday tasks. I see people walking to their classes with their headphones on, almost completely tuned out of the physical world before them until they sit down for class, and then tune out once class ends; but I am no better than them, so what the hey. I have always really enjoyed the feeling of windy gusts, and their sounds are just as appealing. I remember Friday being somewhat windy, so I really enjoyed my walks to and from class, just a bit more than usual I’d say. On my way back to work, I happened to find a small 60 page “memo book” notepad from Standards. In it were only two entries, both of which were small and insignificant, so I picked it up and carried it around with me the rest of the day. Although I didn’t end up using it on Friday, I have used it since and I’ve enjoyed my time with it.
Even if I slept like shit, and didn’t have any music to listen to all day – music is a part of my soul, I should have mentioned that earlier – I really had a nice day on Friday. It feels good to be a part of the world that’s right in front of you instead of always being somewhere else until you are doing whatever it is that you do. Not using my computer didn’t really have a large impact on my day. I mostly use my computer to access Carmen, check my emails, and play/watch video games. It being Friday, I didn’t really need to pay attention to anything school related; that can wait until Sunday mostly. And I don’t always play games every day, so giving that up was not difficult for me. After I left work and was home for the day, I hung out with my roommates and we did typical weekend things, so I really had no need for my phone or computer anymore. But now that I have music back I feel my sanity has been restored. - Aaron Coolman
