We all know well that domestic workers and other workers in the informal sector are subjected to violence and harassment because of lack of protective measures that renders them vulnerable and unprotected. The following days will be fundamental, and the battle of the amendments is already under way. Negotiations are difficult, as employers do not want a mandatory instrument, as they have shown this morning in the debates held in committee.

But we continue to fight with alongside our partners and allies in unity and solidarity.

This is why we need a strong Convention, accompanied by a Recommendation to address the abuse of all workers in the world of work, including those working in private homes, such as domestic workers.

Just as 2011 was history for domestic workers, let 2018 be the start of freedom from abuse for domestic workers!

"Who are we in the world of work? We are domestic workers. We work behind closed doors and high walls. Oftenly we get abused daily, we have nowhere to run because we have no protection and we have no rights, we even have no identity. For us, a Convention with strong Recommendation will give us HOPE, will give us EXPERIENCE that we can get up so we can speak up. Because today if domestic workers speak up at their workplaces they often lose their jobs and they lose hope for their families. We always have to stay silenced. Yes, we've got Convention 189 but Recommendation to add to Convention 189 will make it so much stronger for domestic workers to raise our voices and to have our freedom”
