His claws tore through the demons in a blur of motion, every muscle trained on one thing: keeping Kikyou safe. He couldn’t hide the grin tugging at his lips — those demons never stood a chance, not with him by her side. Protecting her always lit something up in him, quick and bright like flint sparking to life.
Funny how a whole year had slipped away since that afternoon she’d chosen to spare him, even after he’d blundered and failed over and over, chasing the Shikon Jewel like a fool. That day, the air had been crisp, the wind tugging at his hair, and Kikyou had looked him right in the eye, spoken to him as her equal. Something about the way she said his name, the patient warmth in her words — it stuck with him. Since then, all he’d wanted was to walk beside her, shoulder to shoulder, fighting off the monsters that thought they could touch her.
He’d never known what it felt like to belong before her. No one else had ever bothered to see him. It was a lonely thing, living between worlds — not quite human, not quite demon — never really welcome in either. Kikyou changed that. With her, he had a place to stand, even if it was just a small one, tucked away and hard-won.
Inuyasha gave a scoff, trying to sound annoyed. “ Keh, should’ve known you were holding back. Don’t count on me always bailing you out,” he muttered, though they both knew the truth. He’d come for her, every single time, whether she called or not. No amount of bravado could hide that from her — not when her smile, wide and warm and unstoppable, met his. He could never help but smile back, the feeling so natural it was as easy as breathing.
