Igor Mitoraj (1944-2014) Head of St. John the Baptist, 2006. The admirable head of St. John the Baptist, made of very white Carrara marble, was donated by contemporary sculptor Igor Mitoraj to the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri on the occasion of the inauguration of the new bronze doors in 2006. The work is currently on display in the same Basilica, inside St. Peter's Chapel.

I’ve been delving deeper into Igor Mitoraj’s life and sculptures; his work speaks for themselves and to me, very profoundly. He manages to convey with his sculptures a timelessness - the ancient combined with the modern. To me, this catapults him to the forefront of being one of the worlds most prestigious sculptor’s. His fragmented work reflects my own inquisitiveness into the same style and ethos. The parts of the body he purposely chooses to leave out tells a great story about his own ability as an artist to capture what he wants to convey, minimally.
