Virgil stood in line at the bakery, looking over the menu but not truly reading it. The sense of wrongness from the night before hadn't gone away. He couldn't focus. All he could do was stare at the burns on his hands and wonder how they'd gotten there. He wondered again where he'd come from, and why he could only remember the past six years. Why he felt like he was missing someone.
He hadn't lost any more time since that night he came out of the woods that night. He knew that much, at least. It was something he kept in his mind. Paying attention to the time, to when he woke up, and whether he was still in bed or not when morning came. But last night, he'd woken up in the middle of some random street. He'd been dreaming about fire. It'd felt like home to him.
It made him feel sick with worry now. He hadn't slept. He was afraid that he was going to wake up doing something worse than wandering down the street.
"Hi," he said to the woman at the counter. He lacked any of his usual charm. He didn't try to smile at her. Gave up trying to read the menu. "Sorry, I'm feeling a bit scattered. Do you have any recommendations?"
