Only the B-52 Stratofortress has had a longer career as a bomber with USAF than the Douglas A-26/B-26 Invader. Introduced in 1944 as an attack bomber to replace the Douglas A-20 Havoc, the first A-26s went into action in June 1944-September 1944. Redesignated B-26 after the war, the Invaders were one of the first aircraft in action over Korea and carried out the first bomber mission against targets in North Korea in June 1950. Invaders also flew the last combat mission of the Korean War, dropping bombs just minutes before the Armistice went into effect. The Invaders were back in action again in 1960, this time in Southeast Asia. Structural fatigue issues led On-Mark Engineering to rebuild 40 Invaders to the Counter-Invader standard to fly special operations missions in Vietnam. The aircraft were redesignated back to A-26 in acknowledgement of Thai political sensitivities. The Counter-Invaders flew interdiction missions along the Ho Chi Minh Trail. The last Invaders were retired from the USAF in 1972 which were the last examples serving with the Air National Guard special operations units. That’s nearly 30 years of service with the USAF. Not bad for a WW2-era bomber! This particular jet is a civilian-owned Canadair CF-5D, the license built version of the Northrop F-5B Freedom Fighter. It even still wears its former Canadian camouflage scheme. Officially designated by the Canadian Armed Forces as the CF-116, Canada selected the F-5A/B in 1968 as a tactical support fighter. Compared to the Northrop-built F-5A/B variants, the CF-5s had a two position nose gear that extended further to raise the nose for takeoff and shorten the takeoff run. Orenda license built the GE J85 turbojet engines which were uprated. The CF-5s also had air refueling probes and more sophisticated navigation suite. Most of the two seat CF-5s, designated CF-5D, were used in the lead-in fighter training role and in aggressor training with 419 Squadron at CFB Cold Lake in northern Alberta. The aggressor CF-5Ds wore a camouflage scheme as seen in my photo. A Navy Sikorsky MH-53E Sea Dragon basks in the ramp flood lights before sunrise at Fort Worth Alliance Air Shows. Having seen both the Marine Corps’ CH-53E Super Sea Stallions and the Navy’s MH-53E Sea Dragons up close, they never fail to impress on account of their size. The Army’s CH-47 Chinooks aren’t small helos either, but they don’t have the ramp presence that the Sea Dragon has- part of it is the dark gray camo used on the Sea Dragons compare to the lighter gray camo used on the USMC Sea Stallions. But there are two things that set the Sea Dragon apart aside from the camouflage- first the Sea Dragon has large rear view mirrors on struts jutting out from the nose. These are for the MH-53E’s minesweeping role- as it tows the hydrofoil minesweeping sled, the flight crew can monitor the sled via those big rear view mirrors. And to me that always made the Sea Dragon seem like a big semi truck with it’s big side mirrors. Most distinctive, however, are the big fuel sponsons on each side that are much more massive than the sponsons on the CH-53E Sea Stallions. Those sponsons hold about a thousand gallons of fuel which is needed because the drag imposed by pulling the minesweeping sled sucks down fuel more so than the sorts of missions flown by the Marine’s CH-53Es. As cool as the Sea Dragon is, it’s probably the most accident prone aircraft in the Navy’s inventory. Only 46 were built and they have an incident rate three times higher than other helicopters on account of their punishing mission profiles and that the Navy never invested in them as they were to have been retired and then a belated decision was made to keep them in service longer. When American ordered the A319 and the A321, the engine choices were split with the CFM56 for the A319 and the V2500 for the A321. Aside from engine financing packages to swing customers to one power plant to another, American’s selection was likely based on economics- with the A319s flying more frequent shorter legs, the CFM56 is cheaper to maintain than the V2500 per cycle on account of the massive CFM56 fleet out there not just on the A319/A320 fleet worldwide, but also on the 737 fleet. The A321s at American are replacing both 757 flying and the transcon services that were the domain of the 767-200. In that situation, the higher thrust ratings and lower fuel burn of the V2500 gave it the advantage.
