IFComp 2020:Ā āSeasonal Apocalypse Disorderā by Zan and Xavid
This is a review of a game entered into IFComp 2020, the 26th annual interactive fiction competition, which runs until 29 Nov. this year. Anyone can play the games, all of which are free! Voting is open to anyone who ranks at least five of the (record-setting) more than one hundred games! You still have six weeks to play and vote! You should go take a look! Thereās plenty of good stuff there this year!
Like all of my IFComp reviews, this review of Zan and Xavidās Seasonal Apocalypse Disorder is spoilery. You might want to delay reading until youāve played it, if that bothers you.
Ifcomp 2020 notes: A Sense of Harmony
Okay, so, this game is extremely my thing. It's top-notch cyberpunk, with all the requisite tropes deployed in interesting ways. It's a humane story; it never suggests that cybernetic enhancements make people deranged or sensationalizes the protagonist's sex work. The protagonist and even the clients are treated with kindness in the narrative.
You Couldn't Have Done That by Ann Hugo [IFDB]
Your first day on the job wasn't going to be pleasant. Such was inevitable. It's a big change. And, you are autistic.
But this was a different story, far worse than unpleasant.
ifcomp 2020 notes: Mother Tongue, Congee
(not exactly a review; if I have time/motivation I might add reviews to ifdb eventually)
These were the first two games I played, which is convenient as they had similar themes and formats. Both stories are about immigrant experiences, of longing for a culture left behind, of positive mother-child relationships (no tiger moms, thankfully). Both are hypertext stories; Mother Tongue is told entirely through a cell phone texting-like interface (the protagonist talking with their mother), while Congee uses a mostly standard Twine interface, with some texting-like features. Mother Tongue has binary choices that quickly rejoin, while Congee is mostly linear.

Where the Wind Once Blew Free by No Sellout Productions [IFDB]
The War of Ten Dogs is over. Jueyuan and his ten mongrel generals have been defeated. The veterans have returned home. Many return to the city of Mythicus at the heart of the World Tree. Others return to the Windless Prairie, or the southern border towns. They return to piece together what's left of their war-scarred lives, many wondering with every breath why they survived and their comrades didn't? You begin as Silver Bear. He has arrived at the border of the Windless Prairie, guided there by the spirit of his comrade, Snapping Turtle. Snapping Turtle was killed in action in the war while saving Silver Bear's life; now the bear has come to the prairie to repay the life debt. But Silver Bear soon discovers there is far more at stake than the debt he owes. Something has sickened the prairie, imprisoning the wind. Can Silver Bear and a cast of others free the wind? Will Silver Bear finally come to terms with his survivor's guilt and the death of Snapping Turtle? Only you can decide their fate... Produced by No Sell Out Productions. Written by Southwest Underground Writing Krew: a collaboration of Iraq/Afghanistan war veterans scattered to the four winds across the Southwest United States who write about the good, the bad, and the ugly of Southwestern culture.
