What exactly is IEC? IEC stands for Import Export Code. It is 10-digit number issued by Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), which works under Indiaās Ministry of Commerce.
IEC certificate is like your business passport for international trade. Indian sellers on Amazon have crossed 20 billion in exports, with categories like home decor, handicrafts, toys, apparel and beauty products seeing strong international demand. This shows how even small businesses from cities and towns in India are now reaching global customers through online platforms.
Handcraft industry is another great example. Indian handicraft exports reached around ā¹33,123 crore (about $3.9 billion) in FY 2024-25 with buyers from programs like āOne District One Product (ODOP)ā have also helped local artisans and small businesses in grow globally. In Uttar Pradesh alone, ODOP helped exports grow from ā¹86, 000 crore to ā¹1.86 lakh crore since 2017-18
Now Indiaās export business is expected to grow even more. More small businesses are using Instagram, WhatsApp Business, online marketplaces and digital marketing to attract international buyers. Global demand for handmade products, sustainable goods, Indian fashion, wellness products and local crafts is also increasing. The government is supporting exporters through digital system, easier registration and export promotion schemes.
This is why having Import Export Code (IEC) is becoming important not only for large companies but also for small businesses, creators and home-based brands. What starts today as hobby or side business can become global brand tomorrow.
