like yes it’s impossible to distinguish upon download who has intentions to do what. but everyone on this database is admitting to feeding the downloads contained within the dataset to various AI models?? that’s a whole confession. they’ve made their intent clear as day, to feed human transformative works to the plagiarism machine.

and the debate of whether or not gen AI is plagiarism is still ongoing to some extent. but if institutions of secondary education and post-secondary education across the US (i’m inclined to believe other countries too, but someone fact check me, i’m an uncultured american) have decided that AI-generated content is the equivalent of plagiarism and will be handled by administration as such, i am inclined to believe that all of these institutions have had LENGTHY discussions about the ethics of submitting work one hasn’t actually done.

“but that’s for learning purposes, and recreational fanworks are different! schools see gen AI as plagiarism only because it disrupts the learning process! you don’t need a learning process for fanworks!” true, though i’d argue the greater understanding of the layers and nuance within source material is akin to a learning process, but that varies among writers and readers. regardless, gen AI is plagiarism in that it cannot create any ideas that have not already been put into its database. humans can. people bond over being the first to create certain tags on ao3– these are original ideas at work.

machines aren’t perfect and it’s theft when they do it— yes, dude, two things can be true even if we lost you with that really ultra complicated thought. plagiarism can be imperfect. ask any college professor who taught prior to the rise of AI. people used to plagiarize all the fucking time! people plagiarized on accident! people didn’t paraphrase enough, or they didn’t know how sensitive the plagiarism detector programs were!

it was just as prevalent as AI, because the people who put effort into things and still putting fucking effort into things. gen AI is just the sparkly new shortcut.

and it is bad plagiarism in the same way humans can do bad plagiarism. gen AI paraphrases too little, it does not comprehend material in the same way people do, it cannot elaborate on nuance beyond double meanings of words it knows, it cannot have epiphanies mid-writing that change an entire story.

“derivative” and “transformative” are different fucking words with different meanings. one does not equate to the other. derivative directly says something is unoriginal; transformative is original in nature— it adds something that did not previously exist, hence “trans” and “form.” it changes. there is originality somewhere in there, and it is glorious. but i know connotations are hard for the people on that thread.
