What did you think about the Alice plot twist?
D:BH spoilers ahead, obviously.
I think it actually kind of detracts from the moral and the themes they were trying to go for there? And it was poorly executed, it probably shouldāve been revealed way earlier, and given much more opportunity to explore it after the fact? It just seems to undermine itself a bit.
It also makes a lot of the playerās efforts seem kind of moot.
HOWEVER. The actual like... fact about Alice? I actually think is kind of awesome. Not because of how itās portrayed in the game, but because it makes me want to explore all kinds aspects of her.
How does this affect how we view her agency? She has just as much right to decide for herself, can we really argue thatĀ āadultsā (if you can call androids that) have more right to decide than she does? She should have basically the same exact right to choose for herself as Kara or anyone else does.
And what about her future? Physically, she has to depend on her friends to at least some extent, she can basically be overpowered super easy and isnāt very strong. But emotionally? Mentally? Sheās clearly got like psychotherapy skills and wants to help people be better. She takes care of people emotionally, as best she can. What other skills does she have??
Thereās lots of little moments of her that are much more interesting.
When she comforts the android whose girlfriend just died... Is she talking to him telepathically?? He goes from red to blue AWFUL FAST.Ā
āIf I tell you, you wonāt love me anymore,ā she says to Kara right afterwards. She KNOWS whatās up with Kara. And sheās playing her part.
Seriously, the amount of emotional support this kid can give. And not just comfort, but guidance and advice, like āreal life isnāt like that.āĀ
āAre you going to come say good-night, Luther?āĀ she says, very obviously intentionally building a bond there, making him connect.
The fact she can literally shoot Todd to protect Kara?
Sheāll provide literal guidance at several points, especially if Luther isnāt there, and she will SUPER provide moral insight. She repeatedly tries to get you to do not just the right thing, but the careful, safer thing.
Sheās an amazing judge of character.
āWe canāt stop because of me.āĀ Oof. Ooof.
Giving Todd what he needs at the end, despite the fact he doesnāt deserve that forgiveness and comfort? Especially not from her. But she does it anyway, because thatās basically her lifeās purpose.
Basically I super love Alice, and I find her incredibly interesting specifically because of the plot twist, even if it was executed poorly.
