When it comes to the history of Russian icons, the most known iconographic school is Palekh. At the time, the temple that he attended was being painted, which allowed Michael to meet a professional fresco painter and become his assistant. Iconography, as you can see in the image, is not only about painting but also about woodcarving. The featured icon of Saint Nicholas of Mozhaisk is a rare carved icon of the 16th century. As the name suggests, the piece was made in Mozhaisk, a small town in the Kargopol region of the Arkhangelsk Region, Russia. It consists of three parts that together transform it into a folding case. The artist is unknown.

The icon you see in the featured picture was painted in 1906 by the famous icon painter Vasily Guryanov, who restored the original “Trinity” icon by Andrei Rublev. It pays tribute to the Intercession of the Theotokos, a notable Christian feast of the Mother of God, which is celebrated on October 1. In 1907, the image was consecrated in the Dormition Cathedral in Moscow. As of today, the work is considered lost, with the last mention being made in St. Petersburg in 1912.
